Job Title: Correctional Officer 2

Join the State of Alaska Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer 2 and contribute to the safety and security of our communities.

About the Role:

This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. As a Correctional Officer 2, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of inmates, staff, and visitors, as well as maintaining order and discipline within the facility.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform security duties among prisoners in an adult correctional institution or facility
  • Perform a wide variety of administrative, operational, and educational duties in support of the safety and security of adult correctional facilities, personnel, and inmates
  • Assist with maintaining order and discipline, operate security control room, learn and apply techniques of handling unruly and violent prisoners, using the minimum force necessary, in resolving situations, and routine security checks and inspections
  • Assist in creating and maintaining an atmosphere conducive to the rehabilitation of prisoners
Requirements:
  • Successful completion of the Alaska Correctional Officer Academy, or equivalent program accredited by the Alaska Police Standards Council
  • One year of experience learning and performing duties which support the custody, security, and rehabilitation of prisoners in an adult correctional institution
  • Be 21 years of age and a United States citizen or a United States National
  • Have a high school or home school diploma recognized or certified by a state or a local school district within a state as having met that state's graduation requirement, or have a General Educational Development certificate
Benefits:
  • $10,000 sign up bonus ($5,000 upon hire/first scheduled day at facility and $5,000 upon CO 2 certification following successful completion of the Academy)
  • Correctional Officers also earn up to 16 days of paid leave for the first two years of employment, increasing after 2 years based on years of service, as well as also receiving 11 paid holidays annually
Work Environment:

Spring Creek Correctional Center is a maximum-security state-operated adult correctional institution. The institution has a capacity of over 500 male inmates and employs approximately 200 staff.

To be successful in this role, you will need to possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. You will also need to be able to follow oral and written instructions, knowledge of business software, and effectively communicate required information.
