Position Summary
The Medication Assistant (MA) acts as a caregiver, delivering resident-focused nursing care and daily living support to assigned residents under the guidance of a charge nurse. The MA is responsible for providing age-appropriate care that addresses both the physical and psychological needs of residents as outlined in their care plans. Responsibilities include assisting with essential health care tasks such as bathing, grooming, dressing, and recording vital signs, while also offering psycho-social support and personal care.
The MA may help residents with mobility, including transferring and repositioning, using appropriate techniques and equipment. Additionally, the MA is involved in food preparation and dining, ensuring a positive experience for residents during meals. They may assist with meal service and provide hydration and nutritional supplements as needed.
Responsibilities also include administering prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse, documenting care outcomes, and communicating any changes in residents' conditions to the charge nurse. The MA is tasked with collecting non-invasive specimens and vital signs, as well as maintaining cleanliness in residents' living areas through housekeeping and laundry services. They may also support wellness and recreational programs, encouraging resident participation.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred, though not mandatory. Candidates should be at least 18 years old, with prior experience in clinical or nursing assistant roles in long-term care being advantageous.
Completion of annual competency testing and continuing education credits is required, with a minimum of 12 hours annually based on state regulations. Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) may be required in certain states, along with successful completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course.
