Job Title: Vision Educator

Collierville Schools is seeking a qualified Vision Educator to join our team.

Job Summary:

The Vision Educator will provide assessment and consultant services to classroom staff, as well as direct instruction to pupils with visual impairments as needs are identified.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct assessments to determine the degree of visual impairment of students referred for services
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with parents or guardians and staff
  • Prepare reports required by state and/or county; obtain required reports and consult with pupils' physician regarding pupils' physical condition
  • Consult on a regular basis with classroom teachers in planning the instructional program for individual visually impaired pupils; provide/secures or develops special equipment, tapes, and books as available and needed for each student
  • Teach special skills as needed which may include braille, typing, writing, daily living, and prevocational skills; develop goals and objectives for and works directly with individual visually impaired students
  • Coordinate with appropriate resources; order, catalog, distribute, and file materials; prepare pupil year-end progress reports; perform other appropriate tasks as assigned by the program supervisor
Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid Tennessee teaching credential authorizing specialized services for the visually impaired (prefer dual certification including Orientation and Mobility Certification), experience required
  • Ability to teach students in grade levels and age ranges as assigned; ability to work with parents and community; knowledge of subject area and instructional methodologies and techniques
Working Conditions:

The Vision Educator will work in a school setting and may be required to perform tasks that involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation or standing.

The position requires the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals and to communicate orally.

The Vision Educator may be exposed to adverse environmental conditions, such as rude/irate customers.

The position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
