Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Certified Phlebotomist Specimen Processor to join our team at SCL Health. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for accurately collecting patient specimens for diagnostic testing while maintaining a professional and safe environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick) according to established protocols and guidelines.
  • Identify patients using two patient identifiers and label specimens and specimen containers accurately.
  • Determine the correct priority for STAT, Routine, ASAP, etc. specimen collections and collect and receive specimens into the laboratory utilizing computer protocols.
  • File patients' lab reports, requisition charges for the business office, and send reports to outside hospitals and clinics.
  • Post charges and reconcile invoices, investigate complex bills, and research and resolve any questionable patient orders.
  • Enter patient demographic data accurately and maintain required lab records and logs.
  • Clean and maintain equipment, centrifuges, and refrigerators, and record daily temperatures of all refrigerators in the phlebotomy areas.
  • Order supplies and maintain sufficient inventory to efficiently operate phlebotomy services.
  • Assist in the training of new associates and students, and act as a receptionist, greeting patients and answering phones within the laboratory.
  • Document and communicate information thoroughly and accurately, and utilize equipment according to departmental guidelines.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Certification from one of the following organizations required: RPT (Registered Phlebotomy Technician), AMT PBT (Phlebotomy Technician), ASCP American Society of Clinical Pathology, or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Six (6) months of laboratory experience.
Physical Requirements

This role requires regular attendance to perform work on site during regularly scheduled business hours or scheduled shifts. May be required to work at other SCL sites. Knowledge of the collection of Therapeutic Phlebotomies - St James is a plus.

Interact with patients, patients' family, patient care providers, and others requiring the employee to verbally communicate information, as well as understand spoken information. Operate computers and complex and delicate lab equipment with precision and accuracy requiring the ability to move fingers and hands. See and read lab equipment, labels, monitors, and documents. Walk while transporting phlebotomy equipment cart. Remain standing for long periods of time to perform work. Adjust body, including bending, to perform phlebotomy work.
