Job Summary

The Packaging Innovation team at Colgate-Palmolive serves as the scientific authority for the development of packaging materials and sustainability-focused R&D. The Materials Development team is tasked with establishing packaging material strategies, their development, evaluation, recommendations, and qualifications, emphasizing sustainable packaging solutions and the commercialization of innovative packaging technologies. We seek a polymer scientist with expertise in materials development who is passionate about creating sustainable alternatives to traditional plastics and packaging. In this role, you will collaborate with industry innovators to assess and develop new packaging materials for Colgate-Palmolive products.

Core Responsibilities

  • Drive innovation in packaging sustainability: Build a pipeline of new materials focused on minimizing environmental impact and facilitating circularity in end-of-life solutions.
  • Engage with external organizations: Enhance understanding of packaging trends and definitions related to sustainability, composting, biodegradation, and natural polymers.
  • Collaborate with internal teams: Work with Global Procurement, Supply Chain, and Divisional Packaging Leadership to define strategies that align with Colgate's Sustainability Targets for the future.
  • Develop packaging solutions: Ensure that all current and future packaging meets sustainability goals, including reduced plastic usage, recyclability, and the incorporation of recycled materials.
  • Conduct root cause analysis: Partner with Global R&D, Quality, and Engineering to investigate packaging performance issues and recommend effective solutions.

Key Competencies

  • Expertise in material and polymer science.
  • Knowledge of diverse packaging technologies: Familiarity with packaging processes, qualification, and quality control, particularly with non-plastic materials.
  • Self-motivated and proactive: Ability to work independently and efficiently in a laboratory setting for material development and evaluation.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills: Capable of producing and utilizing data to draw conclusions and make informed recommendations.
  • Understanding of material structure and performance: Hands-on experience with advanced characterization instruments.
  • Effective communication skills: Ability to convey technical details to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Business acumen: Awareness of trends and technologies impacting the business landscape.
  • Integrity and values: Promote inclusive behavior that fosters a positive team culture.

Experience & Education:

  • Required: Ph.D. in polymer science, material science, chemical engineering, or related fields with 2+ years of industry experience; or a master’s/bachelor’s degree in science/engineering with 8+ years of industry experience.
  • Preferred: Experience in innovations related to sustainable packaging materials and non-plastic packaging processes.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $103,000 - $130,000 USD. Pay is determined based on various non-discriminatory factors, including experience, job-related knowledge, education, skills, and market location. In addition to base salary, employees may be eligible for annual bonuses, profit-sharing, and long-term incentives for Executive-level roles.
