With a staff of around 200, including over 120 analysts, CSIS addresses the evolving dynamics of international security worldwide.

We are seeking a full-time Associate Fellow to contribute to the China Power Project. The primary responsibility of the Associate Fellow will be to assist in the creation of content for the China Power website. Key research areas encompass: Chinese foreign and security policy, the People's Liberation Army, Taiwan, cross-Strait relations, U.S.-China interactions, and technology policy. Ideal candidates should be proactive self-starters who thrive on a diverse range of analytical tasks and possess a solid foundation in international relations along with basic data analysis skills.

COMPENSATION: The salary range for this position is $65,000-$105,000, based on experience.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Develop and write content for the China Power website and other publications;
  2. Conduct qualitative and quantitative research and analysis on matters related to Chinese national power;
  3. Monitor developments in China's foreign and domestic policies, U.S.-China relations, and cross-Strait dynamics;
  4. Lead initiatives to curate complex datasets;
  5. Provide research and writing assistance to the Program Director and Fellow;
  6. Support additional projects as required;
  7. Assist in drafting grant proposals;
  8. Help manage and mentor junior staff and interns.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master's degree in a relevant field with at least 2 years of pertinent work experience, or a PhD in a related discipline;
  2. Proven understanding of issues related to Chinese foreign and security policy and international relations;
  3. Experience in data visualization and/or data-driven storytelling is highly desirable, though not mandatory;
  4. Advanced proficiency in Mandarin Chinese is essential;
  5. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel/Google Sheets is required;
  6. Familiarity with general-purpose statistical software (e.g., STATA, R, SPSS) is preferred, but not essential;
  7. Knowledge of website development is advantageous, but not required;
  8. Ability to conceptualize new research topics;
  9. Demonstrated excellence in writing and editing;
  10. Capacity to work independently and manage multiple priorities;
  11. Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
  12. Experience in both quantitative and qualitative analysis.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Interns are expected to be present in the office at least three times per week. The physical demands are typical of those encountered in an office setting.
