Role Overview: Surgical Technologist - First Assistant
The Surgical Technologist - First Assistant plays a vital role in the operating room, providing essential support to surgeons during procedures. This position involves assisting with critical tasks such as exposure, hemostasis, and closure, ensuring that surgeries are conducted safely and effectively. In addition to intraoperative responsibilities, the Surgical Technologist also engages in preoperative and postoperative care, enhancing the overall patient experience.
This role requires working under the direct or indirect supervision of a surgeon, focusing solely on surgical assistance without taking on the responsibilities of a scrub nurse or technologist. It is crucial for the Surgical Technologist to possess specific skills that are evaluated annually, with feedback from surgeons contributing to performance assessments.
Position Requirements
- Preferred certification as a Certified Surgical Technician.
- Graduation from an accredited surgical tech program or equivalent on-the-job experience as an Operating Room Technician.
- Encouragement to complete six contact hours of continuing education or obtain three college credits annually in nursing-related fields.
- A minimum of two years of scrub experience in an operating room setting.
- Completion of a formal Surgical Assistant Certificate or Degree Program approved by relevant accrediting bodies, with hands-on training in essential surgical techniques.
- Certification as a Surgical First Assistant must be achieved within a reasonable timeframe according to the guidelines of the certifying body.
- Maintenance of current certification post-achievement is required.
- Submission of two recent letters of recommendation from observing surgeons regarding professional and personal conduct.
- Current American Heart CPR certification is mandatory.
- Possession of the necessary knowledge, judgment, and skills specific to the Surgical First Assistant role.
