Role Overview: Surgical Technologist - First Assistant
The Surgical Technologist - First Assistant plays a vital role in the operating room, assisting surgeons with various tasks to ensure optimal surgical outcomes. This position encompasses not only intraoperative responsibilities but also preoperative and postoperative functions that enhance overall patient care. The Surgical First Assistant operates under the direct or indirect supervision of the surgeon, focusing exclusively on surgical assistance while adhering to established hospital protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in surgical procedures by providing exposure, hemostasis, and closure support.
- Manage preoperative and postoperative duties to improve patient outcomes.
- Maintain compliance with hospital policies and regulations throughout all surgical processes.
- Demonstrate proficiency in specific skills as evaluated annually by supervising surgeons.
Position Requirements
- Preferred certification as a Certified Surgical Technician.
- Graduation from an accredited surgical tech program or equivalent on-the-job experience.
- Completion of six contact hours of continuing education or three college credits annually in nursing-related fields is encouraged.
- A minimum of two years of scrub experience in an operating room setting is required.
- Completion of a formal Surgical Assistant Certificate or Degree Program with hands-on training in essential surgical techniques.
- Certification as a Surgical First Assistant must be attained within a specified timeframe.
- Maintenance of current certification is mandatory.
- Submission of two recent letters of recommendation from observing surgeons is required.
- Current American Heart CPR certification is essential.
- Possession of the necessary knowledge, judgment, and skills specific to the Surgical First Assistant role.
