POSITION SUMMARY
This role supports technical laboratory personnel and may involve the collection, receipt, and processing of biological samples within the department, as well as preparing specimens for analytical evaluation. The position may also include performing waived and/or limited moderate complexity testing, contingent upon meeting CLIA minimum standards or receiving approval from the CLIA Medical Director. This role reports to departmental leadership and follows guidance from senior technical staff.

All tasks are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation standards, and applicable professional guidelines.

CORE FUNCTIONS
1. May process and prepare patient samples as necessary, including: 1) specimen collection with a focus on accurate patient and specimen identification and integrity 2) general laboratory specimen processing 3) referral laboratory processing. May conduct waived and moderate complexity testing under direct supervision while adhering to performance standards and knowledge requirements for approved testing. Demonstrates proficiency with departmental computer systems. Tracks and resolves missing specimens while managing pending lists. Conducts maintenance on laboratory equipment as directed. Ensures compliance with accrediting agency and regulatory standards related to their responsibilities.

2. Prioritizes quality by ensuring all work is accurate, complete, and completed within departmental timeframes. Meets departmental standards for productivity and quality. May perform quality control for testing as directed by technical staff, engage in basic troubleshooting, and communicate technical issues to technical staff. Participates in identifying and documenting deviations from established procedures. Adheres to established methods and practices, demonstrating basic problem-solving skills with quality control, testing, and computer-related issues, while maintaining acceptable specimen rejection rates, if applicable.

3. Engages in departmental financial responsibilities through prudent use of supplies and materials and assists with inventory management. Contributes to departmental initiatives aimed at cost reduction and service improvement.

4. Performs various support tasks as defined by the department, which may include phlebotomy and training responsibilities. May assist in updating training materials and procedures.

5. Communicates professionally, courteously, and effectively with both internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrates basic computer inquiry and problem-solving skills, along with proficient use of communication tools. Exhibits strong verbal and written communication abilities. Fosters positive communication that enhances teamwork. Attends and participates in staff meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; must be at least 18 years old if performing phlebotomy.
  • Progression through career ladder II-IV is contingent upon fulfilling career ladder requirements.
  • Position may necessitate DHS Fingerprinting Certification or the ability to obtain such certification.
  • Depending on department/location, candidates must possess a valid state driver's license in the state of employment and be eligible for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.
  • Phlebotomy/CLA certification as required by state regulations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Successful completion of a laboratory assistant training program.
  • Basic understanding of specimen requirements and handling.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology.
  • Additional relevant education and/or experience.
