Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team at Brookings County. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating and maintaining medium to heavy-duty capacity equipment, including dump trucks, tractors, rollers, loaders, and other specialized machinery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment to perform highway repair and maintenance tasks
  • Assist in snow and ice removal, culvert and bridge construction and repair, and loading and hauling materials
  • Perform service and minor repairs to equipment, including maintenance, tire repair, and other tasks
  • Inspect equipment prior to use to ensure it is in proper operating condition
  • Communicate any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries to supervisors in a timely manner
Requirements
  • Valid South Dakota Commercial Drivers License (Class A)
  • Working knowledge and experience in operation of medium to heavy equipment
  • Ability to perform manual labor, withstand variable weather conditions, and work extended hours if necessary
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions and communicate effectively verbally and in writing
Working Conditions

The work environment is outdoors, with frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and outside weather conditions. The noise level is usually moderate but may be occasionally loud.

Education

A high school diploma or GED certificate is preferred, but any equivalent combination of education and experience as is acceptable to the hiring authority will be considered.
