OBJECTIVE AND SCOPE:

Aligns with the mission, vision, core values, and customer service principles of Fresenius Medical Care North America. Complies with the FMCNA Compliance Program, ensuring adherence to all regulatory and policy requirements. Responsible for delivering high-quality patient care while optimizing clinical operations in accordance with legal, compliance, and regulatory standards. As the Charge Nurse, oversees daily operations to ensure continuity of care, prioritizing patient and staff safety while managing the delivery of effective quality outcomes.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide daily guidance, support, and direction to direct patient care staff, offering ongoing informal feedback and formal input for annual performance evaluations. Participate in staffing decisions, including hiring, disciplinary actions, and recommendations to the Facility Administrator.
  • Ensure adherence to all company and facility-approved procedures and policies, as well as compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Authorize or deny time or personnel schedule changes in the absence of the Facility Administrator, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and documentation procedures for staff work hours.
  • Engage in patient care plan meetings to ensure comprehensive care delivery.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of dialysis practices through participation in scheduled in-services.
  • Train and orient new staff as required.
  • Regularly observe and guide direct patient care staff to ensure adherence to facility policies and procedures.
  • Promote compliance with OSHA programs to maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Oversee overall shift operations, ensuring safety, efficiency, and effectiveness.
  • Conduct monthly staff meetings with the Facility Administrator to keep patient care staff informed of changes in care needs or operational procedures.
  • Meet regularly with the Facility Administrator to discuss personnel and patient care status, issues, and updates.
  • Supervise the documentation of patient information to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Coordinate Charge Nurse responsibilities with Staff RNs acting in relief charge roles.
  • Assess daily patient care needs and appropriately distribute care assignments.
  • Take primary responsibility in emergency situations.
  • Evaluate patient needs, respond to dialysis treatments, and communicate concerns to the attending physician, implementing changes in care as directed.
  • Monitor and supervise all patient care activities during dialysis, providing assistance as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the direct patient care team to make informed decisions that enhance patient care.
  • Continuously monitor patients for potential complications associated with dialysis.
  • Administer medications to patients as per physician's orders.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and resource for staff members.
  • Supervise and participate in the development of short and long-term care plans.
  • Admit new patients following facility procedures.
  • Ensure that educational needs of patients are met, providing education on End Stage Renal Disease, dialysis therapy, diet, and medication.
  • Supervise the safe and effective use of all equipment involved in direct patient care.
  • Safely operate all dialysis-related and emergency equipment as needed.
  • Conduct required testing and verification, initialing checklists for start-up and shut-down procedures as outlined in the Technical Services Manual.
  • Complete the Nurse's Technical Training Program/Water Quality Facility.
  • Assist with special projects or other duties as assigned by the Facility Administrator.
  • Participate in the interviewing process for potential direct patient care staff.
  • Encourage efficient use of medical supplies.
  • Attend and engage in monthly Quality Assurance meetings.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • Daily work includes desk and personal computer tasks, along with interaction with patients, facility staff, and physicians. The role requires travel between assigned facilities and various community locations.
    • The work environment is typical of a healthcare facility, featuring controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels. Exposure to infectious and contagious diseases/materials may occur.
  • Employees must take the Ishihara's Color Blindness test as a condition of employment. Note that failing the Ishihara Test for Color Blindness does not preclude employment; the Company will consider reasonable accommodations.
  • Travel to regional, Business Unit, and Corporate meetings may be required.

SUPERVISION:

  • Direct Patient Care Staff, Ward Clerk as assigned.

EDUCATION:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing school (R.N.)
  • Must be registered and licensed to practice in the applicable State.

EXPERIENCE AND REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Minimum of 12 months nursing experience, with at least 6 months specialized experience providing clinical nursing care to dialysis patients in either chronic or acute settings.
  • Medical/surgical nursing experience preferred.
  • Supervisory or management experience preferred.
  • Certification in CPR or successful completion of a CPR certification course.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
