Medical Laboratory Specialist

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs a variety of laboratory testing procedures, from waived to high complexity, in the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases. This role requires the ability to recognize appropriate and inappropriate selection of lab tests and correlate lab results to patients' clinical conditions. The Medical Laboratory Technician must possess scientific knowledge to evaluate quality control, instrument, and result data.
Key Responsibilities:
Testing and Processing:
Perform waived, moderate, and high complexity testing according to laboratory procedures and encompassing pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases. Perform quality control and quality assurance activities, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Perform specimen processing.
Computer Data Entry & Retrieval:
Access specimens, enter results, retrieve information.
Technical Resource:
Resolve problems and answer technical questions. Serve as a frontline resource to the laboratory's customers. Assist in the review and updating of laboratory procedure manuals.
Participate in Performance Improvement activities. Participate in test method evaluations, validations, and implementation. May oversee lab assistants and non-registered technicians to assure appropriate pre-analytic specimen preparation and moderate or waived test performance. Instruct students and employees.
Requirements:
Associate's degree in a laboratory science or meets qualifications in CLIA. High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required. Medical Lab Technician Certificate within 6 months of hire. Basic computer skills. Good verbal and written communication skills. Customer service and problem-solving skills. Preferred qualifications include a minimum of one year of recent clinical laboratory experience as an MLT, two years of generalist experience as an MLT, certification as an MLT, and an Associate's degree in MLT.
