Substance Abuse Assessment Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:
This role is primarily responsible for conducting assessments related to drug and alcohol use within the Substance Abuse Services program. Responsibilities may also extend to performing substance use evaluations for participants involved in accountability court programs as required. Key tasks include the creation and management of client records within the DENS database or other systems utilized by the organization. This position involves conducting interviews and the referral process during initial client assessments to ascertain the necessary level of treatment mandated by the courts, entering statistical data into the computer database, and reporting findings to the Evaluations Supervisor.
KEY FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts court-mandated drug and alcohol evaluations and provides suitable treatment placement recommendations.
- Supports accountability court programs with substance use evaluations as necessary.
- Transmits relevant information or documents to the Evaluations Supervisor via computer or scanning technology.
- Gathers essential information to facilitate accurate offender assessments.
- Creates, updates, and maintains client files for Substance Abuse Services within the DENS database or other agency databases.
- Ensures confidentiality of all client and office information in compliance with federal regulations.
- Provides testimony in court regarding assessment outcomes and treatment recommendations when required.
- May assist with the check-in process for Substance Abuse Services evaluations.
- Assists with the collection of drug testing samples as needed.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field is preferred. A background in addiction counseling is essential. Experience working with the criminal justice population is advantageous.
Certification as an addictions counselor or licensure in a related field is preferred.
Familiarity with HIPAA and federal confidentiality standards is required.
Must be detail-oriented and capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must maintain all relevant professional certifications.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
General understanding of county organizational structures and complex treatment service operations;
Proficient in both oral and written communication;
Working knowledge of ASAM criteria and DSM-V;
Extensive experience in building effective working relationships with various departments and the public;
Demonstrated ability to foster positive customer relations;
Strong skills in operating personal computers, various software applications, and multimedia programs.
ADA MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Physical Ability: Essential functions of this position require the ability to remain stationary (sitting or standing); operate a computer and other office equipment, such as a calculator, copier, and printer. Incumbents must be able to think analytically, manage stress, concentrate on tasks, remember names and details, observe and examine details, make decisions, and adapt to change. They must also be able to direct others, meet deadlines, stay organized, perform calculations, and type.
Essential functions may require moving about the office and transporting items up to 10 lbs.
Occasional physical activities include bending, twisting, reaching overhead, pushing or pulling, and repetitive use of hands/arms/legs. Incumbents may be required to be on-call and work irregular hours.
Sensory Requirements: Essential functions regularly require effective verbal and written communication skills, along with hand/eye coordination and fine manipulation for equipment use.
Environmental Factors: This position requires the ability to work collaboratively with others or independently.
