Position Overview:

In collaboration with a Registered Physician, the Physician Assistant will deliver comprehensive care in both inpatient and outpatient settings, including emergency department consultations, pre-operative assessments, and post-operative management. This role is essential in fostering a supportive environment for otolaryngology residents as part of our commitment to academic excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

- Collect and document thorough medical histories and conduct detailed physical examinations.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records in the medical documentation system.
- Assist in drafting discharge summaries for patients.
- Implement life-saving interventions in emergencies until further assistance is available.
- Initiate patient admission orders as directed by supervising physicians, adhering to hospital protocols.
- Evaluate patient conditions and contribute to the development of care management plans through effective communication with Registered Nurses, attending physicians, residents, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Collaborate closely with otolaryngology residents to ensure seamless patient care on a daily basis.
- Participate actively in daily care rounds.

Credentialed Procedures:

Perform various procedures as authorized by medical staff credentialing, which may include:
- Flexible laryngoscopy and nasopharyngoscopy for airway assessment.
- Incision and drainage of head and neck abscesses, including intraoral.
- Management of peritonsillar abscesses.
- Cerumen removal and control of epistaxis.
- Foreign body removal from nasal passages and ears.
- Otowick placement for otitis externa.
- Fine needle aspiration and tracheostomy care.

Patient Care:

Provide care for patients presenting with otolaryngology-related issues in the Emergency Room. Deliver wound care services, including cleaning, debridement, and dressing changes. Document orders in the electronic medical record as necessary. Educate nursing staff and patients regarding care processes and procedures.

Qualifications:

- A Bachelor’s Degree and completion of a two-year graduate program in an AMA-accredited Physician Assistant program.
- Current licensure as a Physician Assistant in the State of Rhode Island.
- Strong analytical skills to apply surgical training effectively in patient treatment.
- Excellent interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with patients, physicians, and nursing staff.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills to provide care across the lifespan, considering developmental stages and cultural factors.

Experience:

A minimum of three months of on-the-job training to familiarize with responsibilities and workflows.

Work Environment:

Exposure to surgical procedures and patient care settings is expected.

Independent Action:

Operates independently within departmental policies and practices, referring complex issues to supervisors as needed.
