POSITION OVERVIEW
This recruitment is ongoing and will remain open until a suitable candidate pool is established.
Individuals in this entry-level, non-hazardous role will participate in a POST certified Basic Police Academy (POST Academy) or must be currently enrolled in such an academy. As temporary, at-will employees, they serve at the discretion of the hiring authority.
This classification is limited to a maximum duration of one year. A Community Safety Officer (Recruit) who does not successfully complete the academy will be released from their position.YOUR CONTRIBUTION

The Community Safety Officer (Recruit) will undergo a thorough selection process, including a polygraph examination, comprehensive background check, psychological evaluation, medical assessment, and drug screening prior to attending a POST Basic Police Academy chosen by the City. The City will cover the costs associated with academy attendance.
Upon successful completion of the POST Academy, the Community Safety Officer (Recruit) will be sworn in as a peace officer in the Police Officer (Entry) classification and will enter an 18-month probationary period.YOUR TEAM

The City of Vallejo, located in Solano County, is home to approximately 121,000 residents. It is a vibrant, diverse community situated between San Francisco and Sacramento.

Accompany officers to observe and learn about peace officer responsibilities and techniques.
Utilize police information systems, including computers and telecommunication devices, to enter and retrieve information as directed by an Officer or police staff.
Assist in the processing, packaging, labeling, storing, and destruction of property and evidence; may also help with photocopying, filing, indexing, and locating police records.
Perform errands for the department, such as delivering documents to court and district attorney offices; carry out related duties as assigned.
Knowledge Required:
Basic English grammar, composition, spelling, and punctuation;
Basic mathematics;
Effective communication and public speaking skills;
Effective problem-solving techniques;
Basic law enforcement terminology and concepts;
Basic computer operating systems and software applications relevant to the role.
Skills Needed:
Successfully complete the POST Basic Police Academy;
Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
Learn, understand, and interpret laws and regulations;
Implement and enforce laws, policies, and guidelines concerning the protection of life, property, and the maintenance of peace with a community policing approach;
Observe and accurately recall names, faces, numbers, incidents, and locations;

Exercise sound judgment, often under pressure;
Understand and follow written and oral instructions;
Write efficiently to prepare accurate and factual reports;
Perform basic mathematical calculations;

Utilize computers and software as necessary;
Meet minimum standards for the use of department-issued or approved weapons;
Perform specialized assignments as required.
Minimum Experience and Training Guidelines
A High School diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
Completion of 39 semester units or equivalent from an accredited college or university is highly desirable.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid California driver's license
Must be at least 20 years old at the time of appointment, and at least 21 years of age upon POST Academy graduation
Vision correctable to 20/20 in both eyes with normal color vision
Must be eligible for U.S. citizenship upon academy graduation
No felony convictions
No misdemeanor convictions that prohibit weapons possession
The Recruitment & Selection Process
To be considered for this position, candidates must complete and submit the following:

- Completed Supplemental/Personal History Questionnaire
If you have completed a POST Entry Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLET-B) with a T-Score of 45 or higher, or a National Testing Network Law Enforcement exam with a reading score of 70% or above, a written score of 70% or above, and a video score of 65% or above, and have completed the Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) with a score of 320 or higher, you may submit these scores with your application.
If you do not have these scores at the time of application due to scheduling conflicts, you may email your scores once they are available.
**A passing score on the PELLETB or NTN, along with a passing score on the WSTB, is required to proceed in the selection process.A resume cannot substitute for any part of the application process (i.e., the official application and responses to the supplemental questions).

Applications are accepted and reviewed in conjunction with Police Academy admission cycles that occur multiple times per year.Applicants may be selected to attend one of several Police Academies based on availability.
Applicant Screening and Assessment:
Application screening will evaluate each candidate's supplemental/personal history questionnaire responses, educational background, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities relevant to this position, which may include but are not limited to:
Education, GPA of 2.0 or higher
College enrollment
Academy enrollment or possession of a POST Basic Academy Certificate
Valid California driver license
Citizenship
Criminal history
Individuals deemed most qualified will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview.
Oral Panel Interview :
Oral panel interviews will account for 100% of a candidate's score.
Those with the highest scores will be placed on the eligibility register and referred to the department for further consideration.
Background Investigation :
The most qualified candidates will receive a conditional offer letter and be invited to proceed with a background investigation in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
The information provided in the Personal History Statement will be utilized in the background investigation to assess suitability for the position of Community Safety Officer (Recruit), in accordance with POST Commission Regulation 1953.
Background investigations will also include live scan fingerprinting and a polygraph examination.Candidates who successfully pass the background investigation may be invited to a Chief's interview.
Based on suitability determined by the background investigation and Chief's interview, candidates may undergo a pre-placement psychological and medical examination as the next step in the selection process.
