The Radiation Therapist is tasked with administering ionizing radiation treatments as prescribed by Radiation Oncologists, following established simulation protocols.

Key Responsibilities

A typical day for a Radiation Therapist I at Hackensack Meridian Health involves:

  1. Executing radiation therapy treatments safely and effectively, ensuring adherence to prescribed protocols and performing necessary diagnostic procedures. Key competencies include:
  • Proficiency in ARIA EMR for patient management.
  • Verification of informed consent prior to treatment initiation.
  • Patient positioning using immobilization devices based on simulation notes.
  • Image acquisition and evaluation, implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Delivery of prescribed treatments as directed by the Radiation Oncologist.
  • Accurate documentation of treatment processes in CT Sim and daily records in Aria.
  • Preparation of treatment rooms and equipment, ensuring a safe and organized environment.
  • Conducting quality assurance checks and equipment warm-ups as per departmental standards.
  • Performing thorough pre-treatment chart checks and ensuring all documentation is complete.
  • Maintaining accurate patient treatment records and collaborating with team members on patient status.
Simulating treatment fields according to Radiation Oncologist specifications, demonstrating competencies such as:
  • Assessing diagnostic studies for precise field placement.
  • Preparing and constructing immobilization devices and treatment aids.
  • Documenting clear and comprehensive treatment machine setup instructions.
  • Marking and tattooing for treatment reproducibility.
Operating and documenting quality assurance procedures for treatment machines and simulators.Assisting with compliance to accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.Managing daily treatment schedules in coordination with patient care teams.Reviewing treatment plans prior to delivery and ensuring all necessary documentation is present.Maintaining a clean and organized treatment environment, adhering to safety and hygiene standards.Conducting daily patient interactions, providing education on treatment processes and addressing any concerns.Documenting patient responses and referring to appropriate healthcare professionals as needed.Ensuring compliance with billing procedures and departmental policies.Participating in departmental on-call rotations as required.Other responsibilities as assigned by leadership.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Graduation from an accredited Radiation Therapy Program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience with Varian equipment, Truebeam, and ARIA.
  • Knowledge of True Beam and CT anatomy.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Valid Radiation Therapy License.
  • Certification from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists - ARRT (T).
