Job Overview

The Planning Architect II, under the supervision of the Director of Capital Design within the Office of University Planning, is responsible for the following key functions:
- Collaborate with the Director of Capital Design to ensure that Capital Projects align with the institution's mission, vision, strategic objectives, and overall campus development plans.
- Support the institution's capital expenditure planning initiatives and the formulation of capital projects for the enhancement of the Six-Year Capital Outlay Plan.
- Engage in thorough and timely evaluations of university capital projects from initial concept through to execution phases.
- Participate actively in capital project workflows to guarantee that planning, aesthetics, programmatic needs, and spatial utilizations are suitable and consistent with the project's approved objectives and Campus Design Principles.
- Aid in the design review processes, value management strategies, and construction oversight for capital projects to ensure completion within designated timelines and budgetary constraints.
- Provide expertise in sustainable design practices at both the systems and building levels, offering guidance throughout capital project processes to advocate for sustainable design principles and best practices.
- Assist in the establishment and maintenance of design and planning standards for the institution.

Required Qualifications

- Advanced degree in Architecture, or a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture with equivalent professional experience.
- Proven experience in applying sustainable benchmarking within architectural practice.
- Registration or the ability to become registered as a Professional Architect in Virginia within a year of employment.
- Minimum of five years of professional architectural experience.
- LEED Green Associate certification or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience in project management.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Proficiency in current office software, including word processing and spreadsheets.
- Skilled in design software (e.g., Revit, AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

- Ten or more years of architectural experience.
- Significant experience (3-5 years of the above 10) focused on the design of environmentally sustainable projects.
- LEED AP Certification or equivalent.
- Demonstrated proficiency in technical analysis related to thermal performance, daylight/sunlight, and embodied carbon.
- Experience in a university environment.
- Familiarity with Commonwealth of Virginia directives and higher education facility requirements.
- Experience in the design of higher education and campus planning.
- Experience in developing and maintaining design and planning standards.

Salary Information

Starting salary at $85,000; commensurate with experience.

Additional Information

Work is primarily conducted indoors, with occasional outdoor tasks in various weather conditions.
Repetitive movements associated with computer usage.
Ability to travel to work sites and conduct onsite inspections, which may involve bending, climbing, pushing/pulling, reaching, lifting, standing, walking, and safely handling up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to navigate small spaces and perform tasks on uneven surfaces.
An acceptable and safe driving record is required.
A driver's license check will be conducted.
Travel to various sites may be necessary for training, public outreach, and participation.
After-hours or weekend work may be required as necessary.

A criminal conviction check will be required for the successful candidate.
