Join the team at ECO Magazine as a Marine Ecosystem Research Specialist, focusing on the management of marine fisheries and artificial reef initiatives.
The selected individual will collaborate with fellow biological scientists and administrative personnel to oversee grants and contracts related to the construction and evaluation of artificial reefs in coastal waters, particularly in the Gulf of Mexico region. Responsibilities include gathering, organizing, analyzing, and interpreting both physical and biological data, as well as conducting assessments of artificial reef environments and generating comprehensive technical reports.
Key tasks will involve performing human use monitoring surveys, conducting visual fish censuses underwater, and ensuring compliance with contracts through SCUBA diving and underwater imaging techniques. The role also includes assisting in the preparation and analysis of project data, including the creation of summary tables and visual graphics, and contributing to report development, encompassing figures, tables, and maps.
The successful candidate will engage regularly with various stakeholders, including agency personnel, regulatory bodies, local government officials, and the public.
Key Responsibilities:- Assist in managing contracts for artificial reef construction and monitoring with local coastal authorities.
- Foster and maintain effective relationships with agency managers, regulatory staff, local government officials, media representatives, and stakeholders affected by artificial reef projects.
- Participate in the Dive Team to evaluate and report on the effectiveness and compliance of previously established artificial reef projects, as well as assist with other diving activities as required.
- Ensure the accuracy of the artificial reef deployment database.
- Operate and maintain various project sampling equipment, including vehicles, boats, and remote sensing tools.
- Process vendor invoices and ensure timely payment for services rendered.
- Develop visual presentations and represent the organization at public meetings and workshops.
- Provide courteous assistance to constituents regarding inquiries related to fish and wildlife conservation.
- Promote public support for agency initiatives and programs through positive engagement with Florida's citizens.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a biological science, with a preference for marine sciences. SCUBA certification is mandatory.
