Job Summary

The Clinical Laboratory Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the mission and vision of Northwestern Medicine by adhering to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program. This position is responsible for performing phlebotomy, technical, and clerical functions in one or more sections of the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Presents a professional demeanor and appearance, demonstrating teamwork by helping colleagues within and across departments.
  • Communicates effectively with others, respects diverse opinions and styles, and acknowledges the assistance and contributions of others.
  • Performs phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections per age-related standards.
  • Provides appropriate post-phlebotomy patient care.
  • Identifies need for patient medical assistance and calls for assistance as necessary.
  • Reviews and records refrigerator temperature(s) and QC/QA records, reporting areas of concern to maintenance for repair.
  • Performs low-complexity testing accurately and efficiently under the direction of a CLS or supervisor.
  • Follows lab procedures carefully, communicating all outstanding orders and tasks to the next shift prior to clocking out.
  • Inputs and retrieves lab results in the Laboratory or Hospital computer system.
  • Properly processes specimens for transport to reference laboratories.
  • Follows JCAHO National Patient Safety goals in regard to two patient identifiers and hand washing.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma.
  • Phlebotomy Certification or training from an accredited School or Institution within six months of hire, or equivalent training as a Phlebotomist.
