Job Summary

A Mechanical Apprentice, also known as a Qualified Person (QP), is responsible for maintaining and repairing passenger rail cars and locomotives under the supervision of a Passenger Rail Mechanic. The ideal candidate will adhere to corporate policies, established health and safety protocols, and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform air brake inspections of passenger cars and have knowledge of air brake systems
  • Conduct daily inspections of locomotives, troubleshoot issues, and replace parts as needed
  • Troubleshoot passenger cars, including toilet systems, air conditioning systems, doors, panels, lights, electrical systems, and brake systems, and make necessary repairs
  • Fill out regulatory, client, and company-required paperwork
  • Perform electrical tests, remove, disassemble, replace, repair, modify, rebuild, assemble, adjust, and maintain batteries and electrical equipment on locomotives
  • Communicate written and verbal findings of inspections to the Supervisor
  • Work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call as required
  • Adapt to dynamic train schedules
  • Work outdoors in inclement weather conditions
  • Wear and use required protective equipment while working
  • Take responsibility for own safety while on the job
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned
Requirements
  • Valid driver's license required
  • High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent reading, writing, and reasoning skills)
  • Trade school or formal railroad locomotive or diesel mechanical maintenance training required
  • Knowledge of locomotive mechanical or locomotive electrical or industrial heavy equipment mechanical experience required
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment screening process
