Position Overview:

Sandy Spring Bancorp is currently seeking a Lead Investment Portfolio Strategist. The successful candidate will oversee the underwriting, servicing, and management of a diverse portfolio of business loans with varying complexities, including Commercial and Industrial (C&I), Government Contracting, Asset-Based Lending, and select Real Estate transactions. Additional responsibilities include monitoring loan covenants, conducting Portfolio Reviews, and preparing reports on problematic loans as necessary. The Lead Strategist may also engage with prospective and existing clients to support and expand the portfolio while ensuring satisfactory asset quality and adequate returns. This role serves as a Technical Expert for colleagues and provides mentorship and training to less experienced Portfolio Managers.

Key Responsibilities:

1. UNDERWRITING (45%)

Exhibit strong underwriting capabilities for new requests, renewals, and restructures of existing loans. Conduct and/or review financial analyses of borrowers to identify strengths and weaknesses. Demonstrate a solid understanding of businesses across various sectors and collaborate with Senior Credit Officers, Relationship Managers, and Portfolio Team Leaders as needed. Prepare and present credit requests for approval, including the most complex credits and middle-market companies to the Senior Loan Committee.

2. PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT (40%)

Identify underperforming assets and devise action plans, including restructuring. Collaborate with Portfolio Administrators and Relationship Managers to manage delinquencies and documentation exceptions. Monitor loans that are past due or approaching due dates. Maintain guideline and policy exceptions within acceptable limits. Work with Loan Tracking Administrators to ensure timely requests for financial statement information and accurate follow-ups on collecting overdue financial statements. Demonstrate an understanding of the loan rating system and accurately grade loans. Respond promptly to client inquiries and requests as needed.

3. LEADERSHIP (15%)

Act as a technical resource for members of the Commercial Relationship Management team. Address questions and requests promptly. Collaborate with Treasury Management, Credit, Loan Administration, and other partners to resolve inquiries, complaints, or errors as necessary. Mentor junior portfolio managers and provide guidance on various underwriting or portfolio management tasks. Work with Portfolio Team Leaders and the Portfolio Group Manager on workflow strategies, considering the experience, knowledge, and workload of portfolio managers.

4. OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.

Required Skills:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Requires a seasoned professional with extensive experience in underwriting complex C&I loans across various industries, along with a demonstrated understanding of diverse financial documentation. While C&I underwriting is a primary focus, experience with commercial and residential real estate loans, as well as Government Contracting and Asset-Based credit opportunities, is advantageous. A broad background in commercial banking and a thorough understanding of commercial banking principles and practices are essential.
  2. Ability to adapt effectively to change and work collaboratively with Portfolio Team Leaders to provide leadership to the Portfolio Management team through evolving situations requiring analysis, interpretation, and timely resolution.
  3. Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills are necessary for presenting credit packages of varying complexity.
  4. Advanced problem-solving skills are required to address technically complex issues that necessitate the collection, interpretation, and analysis of data from diverse sources. Analytical abilities are essential for researching problems and proposing viable solutions. Must be capable of evaluating alternative courses of action and their implications for the organization.
  5. A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or a related field is required, along with 7-10 years of experience in Commercial Credit underwriting.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Normal office environment with minimal discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise, or other disagreeable elements. Work includes little or no potential exposure to hazardous conditions. Occasional travel to remote company and/or client locations may be required.

Compensation Information:
