Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY

The Instrumentation and Controls Technician is responsible for executing tasks under varying levels of supervision that pertain to the design, assembly, installation, upkeep, operation, inspection, and testing of diverse control systems equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, electrical, electronic, pneumatic, PLC, computer, variable frequency drive, electro-mechanical, digital, telemetry, and analog components utilized in production, maintenance, and wastewater process control systems.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Install, maintain, repair, overhaul, calibrate, and test a broad range of industrial instrumentation that records, indicates, controls, and regulates parameters such as level, flow, pressure, temperature, position, and water analysis.
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance inspections of all metering control instruments, diagnosing existing or potential issues; perform cleaning, lubrication, calibration, and adjustments as necessary.
  • Plan, install, and commission new metering, controlling, and recording devices, calibrating as needed; may involve extending or connecting related electrical circuits.
  • Interpret wiring diagrams, mechanical drawings, and specifications pertinent to installations or significant repair tasks.
  • Maintain accurate records and generate verbal and written reports of work performed, ensuring adherence to Food Safety policies and reporting any concerns regarding food safety and quality to a supervisor.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of full-time experience as a Controls & Instrument Technician, with skilled work in both mechanical and electro-mechanical repairs or electronic circuitry repair, including at least two (2) years of experience with industrial instrumentation and controls.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • This position requires on-call availability 24/7 and may involve working unusual hours, weekends, and holidays.

IDEAL CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certification, associate degree, or higher in automation and electronic systems, instrument and control systems, or industrial instrumentation.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Familiarity with electrical and electronic circuits, mechanical linkages, telemetering systems, and the fundamentals of PLC and SCADA software and hardware.
  • Proficient in the safe operation of a variety of standard hand and power tools, as well as electronic and electric testing equipment related to field and shop work.
  • Understanding of basic troubleshooting and diagnostic techniques for equipment failures; knowledge of laws, rules, and regulations governing the maintenance and operation of radio, telemetry, and telephone equipment; ability to identify workplace hazards and take corrective actions.
  • Competence in modern office practices, methods, and computer applications related to the work, including word processing, database, and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to inspect, test, repair, and install industrial instrumentation and controls according to established standards; accurately read instruments and interpret wiring and mechanical drawings; safely utilize tools and equipment for testing and calibration; estimate labor and material costs; maintain organized and precise records; perform essential job duties without endangering oneself or others.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • This role requires the ability to work outdoors in various climatic and geographic conditions, with potential exposure to chemicals, noise, temperature extremes, humidity, and hazardous machinery; willingness to work overtime as needed and be subject to standby duty and emergency call-outs.
  • Physical capabilities include sitting for extended periods, repetitive use of hands and feet for operating vehicles and tools, effective verbal communication, hearing for detailed instructions, visual acuity for distinguishing colors and seeing at various distances, and the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
