GENERAL OVERVIEW:

The Nursing Manager for Surgical Services plays a crucial role within the leadership framework of the clinical environment, tasked with enhancing leadership visibility and delivering essential clinical assistance.

This position entails supervising nursing leadership across multiple specialties within the Operating Room at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Under the mentorship of the Nurse Director of the Operating Room, the Surgical Services Nursing Manager acts as a representative of the Nursing Department, aiding the Nurse Director in actualizing the department's vision and principles at the unit level, ensuring that the needs of patients and families are prioritized while nurturing a therapeutic, patient-focused care atmosphere.

The Manager is responsible for cultivating high-caliber staff, analyzing clinical trends within patient demographics, and effectively mobilizing resources to meet the immediate needs of patients and families.

Additionally, this role may encompass leadership responsibilities as deemed appropriate, under the guidance of the Nurse Director, and may involve overseeing specific initiatives.

This position requires a flexible schedule of shifts.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Professional Practice Environment
  • Fosters an environment that encourages exceptional nursing practice.
  • Champions the Nursing Department's vision and unit-specific mission, values, and objectives.
  • Promotes collaboration, effective communication, and respect for diverse viewpoints through role-modeling and mentorship.
  • Engages in daily huddles with clinical personnel for consultation, coaching, and problem resolution.
B. Personnel Management
  • Oversees daily staffing in alignment with unit-specific guidelines established by the Nurse Director.
  • Manages resources dynamically to adapt to fluctuations in patient census and acuity.
  • Guides clinical personnel on patient assignments, emphasizing continuity of care.
  • Participates in scheduling and authorizing requests from clinical staff.
  • Involved in the investigation and execution of corrective actions as directed by the Nurse Director.
  • Provides recommendations for performance enhancement plans and evaluations.
  • Supports clinical staff in their roles under the Nurse Director's mentorship.
  • Develops educational initiatives for support staff and integrates them into the interprofessional team.
C. Clinical Leadership
  • Serves as a clinical authority, embodying the vision and mission of the Nursing Department.
  • Interprets policies and procedures for staff.
  • Implements and monitors unit-specific standards.
  • Facilitates patient flow to ensure timely care in the operating room.
D. Professional Development
  • Engages in continuous self-performance evaluation.
  • Seeks feedback from the Nurse Director and colleagues.

E. Project Management

F. Patients and Families
  • Ensures all patients and families feel acknowledged by clinical staff.
  • Guides staff in creating culturally sensitive care plans.
  • Mentors staff to foster partnerships with patients and families.
  • Consults with staff on managing challenging patient and family scenarios.
  • Facilitates family meetings in the Nurse Director's absence.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Current nursing license in Massachusetts.
  • Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of perioperative experience.
  • Leadership experience preferred.
  • Cardiothoracic experience required.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Demonstrates clinical expertise in the assigned area.
  • Utilizes management concepts in supervising nursing and non-nursing personnel.
  • Exhibits effective decision-making and leadership skills.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal communication skills.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for supervising a team of registered nurses and support personnel.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
  • Reports to the Nurse Director of the designated area.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Works in various patient care environments with exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials.
