Job Overview

Objective: The mission of the Emergency Shelters is to create a secure, hygienic, and nurturing environment that aids in stabilizing homeless women and families by fostering self-esteem, connecting them with community resources, and promoting personal accountability. The Kitchen Operations Supervisor plays a vital role in this mission by overseeing the shelter's kitchen during weekends and holidays, ensuring the provision of three meals daily along with snacks. This is a part-time role (30 hours per week) that reports directly to the Kitchen Manager, who in turn reports to the Shelter Manager.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and serve nutritious and high-quality meals for homeless residents, including children, while adhering to all Maryland health and safety regulations and maintaining a ServSafe certification.
  • Ensure meals and snacks are prepared and served on time, following the guidelines set forth in the Shelter's Resident Guest Handbook, while being adaptable to changes in shelter donations.
  • Assist and guide volunteers in meal preparation and service, ensuring compliance with all health and safety standards as mandated by Maryland law.
  • Collaborate with other shelter staff to guarantee that residents fulfill their chores and responsibilities to a high standard, ensuring that dishes are cleaned and the kitchen remains orderly according to shelter and state regulations.
  • Manage the acceptance of food donations and assist with inventory control of supplies received on weekends, including proper dating, storage, and stocking of food items.
  • Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy kitchen environment by establishing, adhering to, and enforcing sanitation protocols and legal regulations, ensuring all food preparation areas are cleaned and sanitized daily to prevent any risk of foodborne illness.
  • Provide respectful guidance and support to residents, recognizing their diverse backgrounds and experiences, and encouraging personal responsibility as a core value of the shelter.

Qualifications:

Demonstrated effective communication skills, being approachable and engaging.

Ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines, showing a willingness to take on responsibilities and manage multiple projects effectively.

Experience working with homeless or at-risk populations is preferred.

Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; excellent organizational abilities; capacity to work under pressure; ability to work independently as well as collaboratively; self-motivated.

Essential Skills/Qualifications:

  • Minimum requirement: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • ServSafe Certification in Maryland.
  • Valid Maryland driver's license and reliable transportation required.
