Job Description

The Float Pool at TriHealth Good Samaritan Hospital offers a dynamic and flexible work environment for nursing professionals, providing coverage across telemetry and critical care departments.

This unique unit allows nurses to gain broad experience by working in various specialties, with bed counts and staffing levels that vary based on the department's needs.

Nurses in the Float Pool can tailor their schedules with six-week rotation cycles, choosing between twelve-hour or eight-hour shifts, and weekend and holiday options.

Twelve-hour shifts are scheduled every third weekend, while eight-hour shifts occur every other weekend. The orientation process is designed to support each nurse's background, offering individualized clinical training based on experience.

With patient care responsibilities fluctuating depending on the department, nurses experience a varied patient-to-nurse ratio.

To be part of the Float Pool, nurses are expected to have one to two years of experience in their specialty area, while Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification is required for those working in critical care and telemetry.

However, new graduates with a healthcare background are also considered.

Job Overview

This position is responsible for system-wide patient access to TriHealth's inpatient services by planning, coordinating, and managing requests for bed assignment and patient placement.

In accordance with clinical standards and guidelines, this position has the authority to determine appropriate patient placement through effective communication with physicians, all levels of nursing, and support personnel.

This position understands the financial impact of decisions regarding patient access and resource utilization, and uses this knowledge in decisions regarding patient capacity.

Also maintains policies and procedures related to capacity issues. Collaborates with executive leadership on patient throughput, capacity management, and effective bed utilization.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • May be actively completing BSN with RN-to-BSN contract in place Registered with active valid license in OH, Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) 2-3 years of critical care experience as Registered Nurse.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience with computer usage, data gathering, analysis, and statistical application.
  • Organized with ability to implement projects, Problem-solve creatively and accurately assess situations.

Job Responsibilities

Utilizes critical thinking to make appropriate patient placement decisions taking into consideration patient diagnosis, prognosis, physician service, infectious disease status, staffing, acuity, and applicable policies.

Utilizes interpersonal skills to collaborate with multiple care partners across the system including unit leadership, executive leadership, physicians, infection prevention personnel, and environmental services to effectively maintain an efficient patient throughput.

Consistently demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Serves as a role model in the utilization of TriHealth Way behaviors during internal and external customer interactions.

Maintains and/or enhances current knowledge through active participation in continuing education activities, participation in professional organization activities, specialty certification, and/or advanced degrees.

Routinely engages in self-assessment of role accountabilities, identifying areas of strength as well as areas for continual improvement. Demonstrates leadership through performance and behavior. Maintains composure in difficult situations and remains prepared to deal with rapidly changing situations.

Serves as an entry-point ambassador to TriHealth inpatient services and serves as a mentor to staff. In the rare event of a disaster, temporarily functions as administrator until one can arrive on-site.
