About the Job

This position is located in the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The selected candidate will work as a Museum Technician, responsible for the operation and management of the museum collection.

Key Responsibilities
  • Unpack and process museum objects, performing limited cleaning and preservation tasks.
  • Identify preservation needs and recommend additional actions to ensure the long-term conservation of the collection.
  • Repack objects with care, ensuring complete labeling and data preservation.
  • Photograph collections objects for documentation and research purposes.
  • Identify and label objects by matching documentation field labels, notes, and other relevant information.
  • Prepare objects for storage or display, following established guidelines and protocols.
  • Inventories, documents, and stores items, maintaining accurate records and databases.
  • Seek assistance for situations not covered by instructions or guidelines, ensuring the collection's integrity and safety.
  • Place objects in storage, maintaining the organization established by the supervisor.
  • Prepare, maintain, and organize manual and automated curatorial records, including accession records, catalog records, and donation forms.
  • File records in accession folders and affix catalog numbers to objects.
  • Maintain and update cataloging and database systems.
  • Perform collections care activities as directed, following established standards and protocols.
  • Implement museum maintenance and housekeeping schedules, ensuring a clean and safe environment for the collection.

  • Assist in scheduled cleaning of museum collections storage, maintaining a clean and organized environment.
  • Implement the museum environmental monitoring program, gathering data, maintaining equipment, and preparing permanent records.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

  • Will be required to wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards.
  • May be required to work overtime.
  • Must be at least 18 years old or meet specific requirements for younger applicants.
Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, unless otherwise stated. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit, your resume must clearly indicate the nature of duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment, and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

  • At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes collection management, registration and cataloging of museum materials and records, research archives, and using basic preservation, restoration, or conservation methods to manage collections of museum material.
  • Successful completion of at least four full years of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field.
  • A combination of education and experience as described above.

Volunteer experience is also creditable. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs and other organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
