The Cost Accounting Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting the Corporate Controller with internal financial reporting essential for the effective management of all business operations.

The primary objective of this position is to categorize, document, and accurately distribute expenditures to ascertain the costs associated with products or services, evaluate these costs in relation to sales figures, and determine overall profitability.

This role encompasses responsibilities related to the identification, documentation, and oversight of costs through thorough analysis and classification to establish cost per unit.

As a collaborative partner to the Plant Controller, the Cost Accounting Specialist will deliver targeted support to the Plant Operating Team and plant staff.

Key responsibilities include:


Budgeting and Forecasting:
Collaborating with plant personnel to develop the annual budget, along with weekly and monthly forecasts.

Financial Statement Analysis:
Conducting analysis (compared to forecasts, plans, and prior year), distributing, and presenting financial reports to the Plant Operating Team.

This involves training staff on financial interpretation and, importantly, identifying root causes of any issues, guiding the implementation of corrective measures, and monitoring outcomes.

Developing metrics to enhance efficiency and effectiveness:

Planning, researching, and gathering data to assess the costs of business activities such as raw material procurement, inventory management, and labor, while analyzing changes to evaluate their impact on costs.

Providing insights for specific enhancements in plant materials, labor, overhead, waste, floor planning, inventory levels, staffing, etc., to boost the efficiency and effectiveness of the plant.


Inventory Accuracy:
Ensuring accurate reconciliation and maintenance of inventory records within the scope of Plant Operations.

Fixed Asset Accounting:
Assisting project leaders in preparing capital requests, including cost justification. Monitoring and reporting on project status and expenditures against the plan. Ensuring fixed asset records are accurate and up-to-date.

Policy Procedures and General Operational Review:
Ensuring robust controls and procedures are in place. Assisting Operations in conducting audits and maintaining controls. Monitoring compliance and providing corrective support related to internal audit findings. Aiding operations in maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements, including performing audits and maintaining controls.
Assisting in estimating costs for new and proposed products and projects.
Performing additional projects and duties to support ongoing business needs.

Nature & Scope:
Utilizes practical knowledge of the job area typically acquired through advanced education and work experience.
Handles a range of primarily straightforward assignments.
Works independently with general supervision.
Encounters challenges that are difficult but not typically complex.

Knowledge & Skills:
Familiarity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and a strong background in cost systems.
Experience collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams on the development and analysis of cost standards.
Basic understanding of functions in other departments (engineering, customer support, IT, procurement, marketing, sales, etc.).
Excellent analytical and quantitative skills, with a keen attention to detail and accuracy, as well as strong problem-solving abilities.
Proficient in MS Office – Outlook, Word, and Advanced Excel skills; Access knowledge is a plus.
Effective written and verbal communication skills, including active listening and questioning, with strong business acumen.
Exceptional planning and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
Capable of executing specific projects to meet goals and deadlines, results-oriented and customer-focused.
Able to collaborate effectively with all levels of management and foster positive working relationships.
Demonstrates good judgment, strong work ethics, and integrity in the workplace.

Experience:
2 – 5 years of experience in Plant or Operations preferred.
Experience with Sarbanes-Oxley and Controls is advantageous.

Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.

People Management:
No direct reports.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment:

Division Controller / Director, Accounting Operations / Assistant Controller.
