Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Laboratory Team Lead to join our team at Mercy Health System. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating technical activities of laboratory staff, as well as performing clinical laboratory duties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collect patient specimens and utilize the Information System to receive patients, order and collect samples, test results, answer questions from nurses and physicians, document quality control activities, and produce reports required to perform job tasks.
  • Confirm accuracy of patient sample identification prior to performing analyses, evaluate specimen quality, and identify when unacceptable. Document information concerning quality of specimen, impact of sub-optimal specimens on test values, and initiate recollection procedure as indicated.
  • Perform waived, moderate, and high complexity lab tests as defined by CLIA in the lab specialties of hematology, urinalysis, chemistry, or blood bank by automated and manual methods according to defined policies and procedures.
  • Analyze test results prior to release of information to chart for validity and accuracy, recognize subtle yet significant problems which occur with testing methodologies, troubleshoot suspect test results using technical knowledge and experience, and implement corrective action when inaccurate, inappropriate findings/results/reports are identified.
  • Assure that designated turnaround times for results are met and that critical results are appropriately reported and documented.
  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing procedures as defined by policy, interpret and troubleshoot quality control results to ensure accurate and precise test results, perform preventative maintenance, advanced troubleshooting, and calibration of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Investigate and resolve technical issues, participate on interdepartmental committees or teams, teach students and train new partners, review quality control results, submit data to peer review organization, and make necessary adjustments for area of specialty.
  • Develop effective orientation checklists and training protocols for partners, assure initial and annual tech competency checklists are completed according to policy, prepare and deliver partner performance evaluations and skill/competency checklist, evaluate new methods, procedures, and equipment, and assure compliance with regulatory standards.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, or HEW equivalent or degree in laboratory science with recent experience in a laboratory of similar complexity.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Must be qualified to perform high complexity testing according to CLIA Standard; Testing personnel qualifications.
  • MLT/MT/MLS Generalist Certification or Specialty Certification BB, C, H, M, HTL, or CT required.
Work Environment

The employee is frequently required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, talk, hear, and smell. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
