Job Purpose:

Under the direct guidance of a certified educator, this position involves a range of responsibilities aimed at supporting the instructional program by engaging with students in individual or small/large group settings. Responsibilities include preparing educational materials, maintaining classroom order, and facilitating planned activities using methods and resources specified by the teacher. Some roles may require specialized skills in addressing the unique disabilities or learning requirements of students.


ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
To successfully fulfill this role, an individual must be capable of meeting each requirement effectively. The qualifications listed below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for the position.

- High School Diploma or equivalent as mandated by the Oregon Department of Education.
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with others and communicate proficiently (both verbally and in writing) with students and staff.
- Capacity to comprehend and adhere to both oral and written directives.
- Flexibility in working with students and staff.
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality.

In bilingual roles, proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish, English, or other specified languages is required.

- Ability to manage student behavior in instructional and non-instructional environments without continuous teacher oversight (collaborative team approach).

- Competence in delivering instructional programs as directed by the supervising teacher to students, including those with significant learning and physical disabilities and/or behavioral challenges.

- Capability to thrive in a physically and emotionally demanding environment; perform the physically intensive aspects of the job.

- Proficiency in implementing behavior intervention strategies as instructed by the supervising teacher and adhering to behavior intervention plans for students exhibiting challenging behaviors, as necessitated by specific job assignments.

- Ability to follow established protocols provided by the teacher or school nurse for students requiring assistance with basic needs such as feeding, personal hygiene, or medical procedures as dictated by specific job assignments.

- Knowledge of English language usage, mathematics, and a foundational understanding of the subjects in which assistance is provided.

- Valid First Aid certification, including HIV training.
- Proficient typing skills and ability to operate standard office equipment such as computers, copiers, and word processors; familiarity with audio-visual equipment.

Physical Requirements:
Includes moderate physical stamina, frequent standing, walking, bending, and the ability to physically assist students as needed, following appropriate training. Potential exposure to bodily fluids when assisting students with personal care and health needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


- Assist educators in planning and executing learning experiences for students enrolled in special programs; collaborate with teachers to provide insights on student performance and assessment activities.

- Support the teacher in developing tailored strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on a compassionate understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.

- Facilitate instruction for students in both group and individual settings, often without direct supervision from the teacher; adjust lesson plans or teaching strategies during instructional activities as directed by the licensed teacher to meet IEP goals and objectives.

- Attend to the identified physical needs of students, including toileting, feeding, and health checks.

Maintain the highest standards of ethical conduct and confidentiality regarding student and staff information.

- Assist in overseeing classroom management in accordance with district discipline policies, which may involve physical restraint, movement, lifting, and carrying of students.

- Supervise students in various settings, ensuring a safe environment.
- Perform clerical tasks related to student record keeping, such as filing and related duties.
- Support the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, and recreational periods.
- Engage in large group activities such as reading aloud and storytelling.
- Read to students, listen to their reading, and participate in other forms of oral communication.
- Review notebooks, correct assignments, and supervise testing and make-up work as assigned by the teacher.
- Promptly inform the teacher or principal of any issues. Maintain communication with the assigned teacher regarding student progress and behavior, alerting them to specific concerns or important information about individual students.

- Serve as the primary source of information and assistance for any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.

- Participate in staff meetings and professional development programs as requested.

- Perform additional tasks as deemed appropriate by the Board or Administration.


CERTIFICATIONS AND CLEARANCES REQUIRED:

  • Valid First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Significant physical capabilities include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, effective communication, and visual acuity for various tasks.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Compensation will be in accordance with the current salary schedule as outlined in the Classified Collective Bargaining Agreement.

EVALUATION:
The performance of this position will be assessed annually by the building principal.
