About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Design for Manufacture (DFM) Engineer to join our Research and Development Team at Powell Industries. As a DFM Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring that new designs are ready for large-scale manufacturing, while also driving cost optimization and improving safety, quality, and operating efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to ensure robust DFM/DFA/DFX, providing leadership and expertise in product manufacturability.
  • Review product designs at the part/component level to ensure ease of manufacturing and assembly.
  • Identify and communicate manufacturability and assembly concerns and risks, providing clear design change recommendations throughout the product development process.
  • Ensure product manufacturing and assembly requirements are clearly understood by manufacturing partners.
  • Assist in the development of new products by studying product requirements, researching, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment.
  • Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning work flow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
  • Assure product and process quality by designing testing methods, testing finished products and process capabilities, establishing standards, and confirming manufacturing processes.
  • Provide upfront input into prototype designs by providing manufacturing decision-making information, such as calculating production, labor, and material costs.
  • Provide manufacturing engineering information by answering questions and requests.
  • Complete design and development projects by training assembly staff.
Requirements
  • BS Degree in Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in a Manufacturing Engineer role.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a DFM/DFA specific engineering role.
  • Strong understanding of sheet metal design, especially with self-fixture concepts.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer skills using Oracle and MS Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated success with specifying, implementing, and manufacturing equipment.
  • Demonstrated strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Advanced knowledge using drafting/CAD skills (Autodesk Inventor preferred) with the ability to create and modify designs.
  • Experience with either the Toyota Production System, Lean Manufacturing, or Theory of Constraints.
  • Proven track record of completing process improvements from conception through final implementation and ramp-up.
  • Familiar with statistical test procedures and corrective action techniques.
  • Excellent mechanical and electrical systems aptitude, including understanding of pneumatic, hydraulic, and servo positioning systems, as well as machine controls.
  • Project involvement and organizational skills to handle multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated simple analytical and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to implement designs and solutions.
  • Able to follow directed instruction.
  • Able to lead change and respond to tactical changes.
  • Able to prioritize and manage time effectively (self-motivated and self-managing).
  • Attend in-house and outside training sessions.
  • Learn policies and procedures, work instructions, ISO policies, safety rules and regulations, and vendor products.
Working Conditions

The employee typically performs duties in a normal office environment, with some work in a manufacturing environment and exposure to the elements of our factory. There may also be some work performed in the field with exposure to construction sites or active customer facilities.
