About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Design for Manufacture Engineer to join our team at Powell Industries. As a key member of our Research and Development team, you will play a critical role in ensuring that our new product designs are ready for large-scale manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: Work closely with our engineering teams to ensure robust design for manufacturability, providing leadership and expertise in product manufacturability.
  • Product Review and Design Improvement: Conduct thorough reviews of product designs at the part/component level to ensure ease of manufacturing and assembly.
  • Manufacturability and Assembly Concerns: Identify and communicate manufacturability and assembly concerns and risks, providing clear design change recommendations throughout the product development process.
  • Manufacturing Partnerships: Ensure that product manufacturing and assembly requirements are clearly understood by our manufacturing partners.
  • Product Development: Assist in the development of new products by studying product requirements, researching, designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment.
  • Manufacturing Efficiency: Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning work flow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
  • Product and Process Quality: Ensure product and process quality by designing testing methods, testing finished products and processes, establishing standards, and confirming manufacturing processes.
  • Manufacturing Decision-Making: Provide upfront input into prototype designs by providing manufacturing decision-making information, such as calculating production, labor, and material costs.
  • Manufacturing Engineering Information: Provide manufacturing engineering information by answering questions and requests.
  • Training and Development: Complete design and development projects by training assembly staff.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience: Minimum 10 years of experience in a Manufacturing Engineer role, with 3-5 years of experience in a DFM/DFA specific engineering role.
  • Skills: Strong understanding of sheet metal design, especially with self-fixture concepts; proficiency with computer skills using Oracle and MS Office Suite; experience with specifying, implementing, and manufacturing equipment; and advanced knowledge of drafting/CAD skills (Autodesk Inventor preferred).
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with the Toyota Production System, Lean Manufacturing, and Theory of Constraints; proven track record of completing process improvements from conception through final implementation and ramp-up; and experience with statistical test procedures and corrective action techniques.
  • Personal Qualities: Excellent mechanical and electrical systems aptitude; understanding of pneumatic, hydraulic, and servo positioning systems, as well as machine controls; project involvement and organizational skills to handle multiple priorities; and ability to implement designs and solutions.
Working Conditions

The employee typically performs duties in a normal office environment, with some work performed in a manufacturing environment and exposure to the elements of our factory. There may also be some work performed in the field with exposure to construction sites or active customer facilities.
