Job Overview:

Vision Impairment Support Specialist I
The Vision Impairment Support Specialist I is appointed by and reports to the Field Supervisor.

This role involves entry-level responsibilities aimed at delivering essential services to children who are blind or visually impaired, along with their families. This is achieved through direct skills training, parental guidance, and case management, all designed to enhance the child's independence and encourage vocational exploration and growth.

Individuals in this position provide direct services and manage a caseload within a specific area, collaborating with community and educational partners to ensure that each child achieves their unique objectives.

Work at this level is conducted under general supervision and considerable mentoring, allowing for some degree of initiative and independent decision-making.

Specialists in this role may also offer training and mentorship to fellow specialists. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Key Responsibilities:

Regular attendance is expected in accordance with agency leave policies, along with the performance of other assigned tasks.



Responsibility 1:
Delivering and documenting quality BCVDDP services to children and families (35%)

Standards:

  • Facilitates the creation and execution of Family Service Plans.
Each child on the caseload will undergo an Initial Assessment.

Each child will receive one Annual Assessment annually.

Implements designated services and tracks progress through ongoing communication with the child, family, and external service providers throughout the duration of the case.

Encourages the idea of employment and future self-sufficiency for children who are blind or visually impaired within the BCVDDP framework.


Ensures that adaptive aids, devices, and evaluated services are provided in line with BCVDDP policies.

  • Completes service documentation in the electronic system within the month the service is rendered.
Achieves a minimum of 45 Service Contact Requirements (SCR) monthly unless in a probationary period.

Meets the annual SCR contact standard unless in a probationary period.

Each child on the caseload will receive eight contacts per year, with at least one contact occurring each quarter.



Responsibility 2:
Providing high-quality BCVDDP Direct Skills Training services to children, families, external partners, and BCP staff (30%)

Standard:

  • Internal Trainings
Evaluates, plans, and delivers Direct Skills training activities to 75% of active children/families annually to meet individual goals.

  • External Partners
Engages in at least one outreach, training, or community event each year.

  • Maintains necessary communication and collaborates with area ECI, LEAs, ESCs, TWC, medical providers, and other relevant referral sources.
  • Utilizes additional resources as needed.

Responsibility 3:
Ensuring compliance with BCVDDP Program Policies, Procedures, and Quality Assurance (25%)

Standards:

  • Quality Assurance

Meets all quality assurance benchmarks during the probationary period, including completion of field observations, case reviews, staffings, and on-the-job training.


Achieves a quality assurance standard of an overall case review performance of 80% or higher.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of counseling techniques applicable to children with disabilities.

Competence in report and record-keeping practices.

Skill in using personal computers and familiarity with the Windows environment and Microsoft Office software.

Ability to assess and provide appropriate counseling, guidance, and support in alignment with the established program plan.

Capability to develop an individualized program plan with the child and family based on diagnostic and evaluative data.

Proficiency in articulating ideas, instructions, and reports both orally and in writing.

Ability to cultivate and maintain effective working relationships with consumers, departmental staff, agency personnel, and external organizations.


Capacity to plan, organize, and review essential functions for optimal outcomes.

Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; calculate decimals and percentages; and interpret graphical data.
