The McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston) is seeking candidates for the position of Advanced Care Provider Coordinator within the Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care Division of the UTHealth Houston Children's Heart Institute.


This position acts as a vital link for the Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners in the Acute Care setting at the Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital Heart Center Intensive Care Unit (CMHH HCICU).


The Children's Heart Institute (CHI) is in search of a committed professional to enhance our Pediatric and Congenital Heart team.

Position Overview:


The role involves coordinating Nurse Practitioner and/or Physician Assistant services in both clinical and administrative capacities within the Heart Center Intensive Care Unit (HICU).

This includes managing staffing and orientation for assigned team members, planning and delivering ongoing education and training, and upholding infection control and safety standards while promoting patient-centered communication and care. The schedule entails a combination of shifts, including weekdays, nights, swings, holidays, and weekends.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute complex, standardized patient care procedures requiring specialized training, typically performed by a physician, without constituting the practice of medicine.
  • Conduct independent and physician-supervised rounds in the Heart Center Intensive Care Unit (HICU).
  • Perform patient evaluations and assessments, providing appropriate treatments, including monitoring and prescribing medications.
  • Coordinate, direct, and implement patient care plans.
  • Order and interpret laboratory, diagnostic, and radiographic tests.
  • Monitor patient treatment programs and relay pertinent medical information to the attending physician.
  • Document all patient interactions, observations, interventions, and actions in a medically appropriate manner within the patient's medical record.
  • Manage volunteer faculty coordination, develop departmental event calendars, and participate in committees aimed at enhancing patient care quality and preparing for accreditation.
  • Oversee administrative functions for Nurse Practitioners and/or Physician Assistants, including continuing education initiatives.
  • Facilitate annual performance evaluations in collaboration with supervising physicians, ensuring compliance with licensure and credentialing for assigned Advanced Practice Providers (APPs).
  • Engage in hospital committees and task forces representing patient or community interests, while planning and implementing systems to meet regulatory Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements.
  • Complete all necessary record-keeping and report submissions mandated by regulatory bodies.
  • Develop systems to fulfill Continuous Quality Improvement requirements.
  • Respond to emergency situations as necessary.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Possess or be eligible for a DEA license.

Current Texas Licensure as a Registered Nurse and as an APRN-NP or current Texas Licensure and Certification as a Physician Assistant.

Current specialty certification as required by the department, excluding FNP certification unless paired with a post-master's certification in specialty.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or specialty certification as required by the department.

Education Requirements:
Master's degree in Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner or a Master's degree in Nursing with completion of a post-master Nurse Practitioner Certification Program, or a Master's degree as a Physician Assistant.

Experience Requirements:
A minimum of four years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.

Physical Demands:
Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
Security Considerations:
This position may involve responsibilities that are security sensitive and are subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.
Residency Requirement:
Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
