The Clinical Risk Management Specialist plays a pivotal role in enhancing patient safety and quality of care within the healthcare environment. This position requires a dedicated professional with extensive clinical expertise to navigate both internal and external patient safety challenges. The specialist's profound clinical insight and analytical skills are vital for conducting thorough risk evaluations aimed at identifying potential or existing threats to patient safety, as well as for the establishment and maintenance of robust patient safety initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Investigation of Significant Adverse Events: Conducts comprehensive, system-wide reviews to ascertain whether incidents qualify as significant adverse events or meet regulatory definitions.
  • Facilitation of Interdisciplinary Analyses: Guides the formation and ongoing development of interdisciplinary Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) and Failure Mode and Effects Analyses (FMEAs) in accordance with regulatory standards.
  • Opportunity Identification: Recognizes areas for improvement, formulates strategies, and prioritizes initiatives to enhance patient and medication safety. Engages in multidisciplinary committees to address incidents and near misses, aiming to mitigate risks and enhance system performance.
  • Evidence-Based Evaluation: Employs a research-driven approach in case assessments and proactive educational initiatives to achieve patient safety goals.
  • Presentation of Safety Reviews: Prepares and delivers detailed patient safety reports to senior management and at multidisciplinary forums, utilizing data visualizations to communicate findings effectively.
  • Organizational Education: Provides training across various disciplines, focusing on principles of patient safety science and specific departmental needs.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Collaborates with relevant departments to ensure adherence to federal and state regulations, as well as organizational policies.
  • Event Planning: Involved in the organization and execution of patient safety initiatives, including surveys and awareness campaigns.
  • Data Management: Establishes and maintains an organized filing system and database for documentation, assisting in the compilation of information for reports and inquiries.
  • Administrative Support: Performs necessary clerical tasks to ensure timely and accurate processing of materials.
  • Medication Safety Strategy: Participates in the development and implementation of a comprehensive medication safety plan, focusing on error prevention and compliance with medication management standards.
  • Additional Duties: Engages in departmental activities aimed at process improvement and waste reduction.

Educational Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree in biological sciences; a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
  • A current, active Registered Nurse license is required.

Experience and Skills:

  • At least 5 years of nursing experience in an acute care setting.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in a quality improvement or peer review capacity is strongly preferred.
