About the Position

This is a challenging opportunity to join the U.S. Department of the Interior as a Civil Engineer - Geotechnical Specialist. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for performing geotechnical analyses and designing embankment dams and other geotechnical structures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform geotechnical analyses and design embankment dams and other geotechnical structures
  • Develop and implement geotechnical recommendations for general civil engineering, building foundations, underground structures, and open channel hydraulic conveyance feature projects
  • Use specialized software to analyze and design geotechnical projects
  • Participate in the development and oversight of field exploration programs and geotechnical laboratory investigations
  • Assemble and document key technical information for and/or participate in risk analyses for static, seismic, and hydrologic potential failure modes for embankment dams
  • Perform the duties of team leader for assigned projects, formulating schedules and budgets, and directing the work of engineers and technicians
  • Prepare reports on designs developed for project planning and construction purposes, and prepare technical memoranda to support decisions related to the analysis, design, and construction of embankment structures or geotechnical work on non-embankment structures

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National
  • Must be suitable for Federal employment, determined by a background investigation
  • Must submit a resume and supporting documentation
  • Must meet any minimum education and/or experience requirements
  • Must submit transcript(s) to verify education requirements
  • Must submit a current valid Professional Engineer (P.E.) license

Qualifications

  • Must meet the Basic Qualification Requirement and the Additional Requirement
  • Must have a degree in engineering or a related field, or a combination of education and experience that furnished a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering
  • Must have specialized experience equivalent in responsibility and scope to the GS-11 level performing geotechnical engineering analysis and geotechnical design on embankment dams or embankments

Education

  • This position does not allow substituting education for experience
  • Must submit a copy of college transcript(s) to support claimed education if substituting education for experience
