Job Summary

The Recreation Therapist position at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration is a critical role in providing direct patient care to a medically complex and diverse population. As a Recreation Therapist, you will be responsible for conducting comprehensive evaluations, developing individualized treatment plans, and implementing evidence-based recreation therapy interventions to address the biopsychosocial needs of our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct thorough assessments of patients' cognitive, leisure, physical, emotional, psychological behavior, and spiritual functioning to identify areas of need and develop targeted treatment plans.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans that incorporate the four-step process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of services delivered.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary treatment teams to ensure comprehensive care and address the complex needs of our patients.
  • Provide direct patient care, including conducting treatment sessions, leading activities, and engaging Veterans individually and/or in groups to achieve treatment goals and objectives.
  • Document assessments, progress, and treatment plans in the electronic medical record and MDS following PM&R policy.
Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in therapeutic recreation or recreation/leisure with an option and/or emphasis in therapeutic recreation, or a bachelor's degree or higher in any field from an accredited college or university and must be a certified therapeutic recreation specialist (CTRS).
  • Certification in recreation therapy as a CTRS by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).
  • Ability to adapt assessment tools and treatment interventions to address the complexity of the diagnosis or disabilities and demonstrate the clinical reasoning necessary to identify the need for further in-depth specific assessment of function and utilization of unconventional methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge to independently interpret provider referrals and consults; and apply all health and safety regulations to minimize and mitigate risks in the provision of patient care and the environment of care.
Work Environment

The Recreation Therapist position is located at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, and requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time, frequent bending, crouching, reaching, stooping, stretching to set up and take apart equipment and apparatus, lifting and repositioning Veterans, pushing, and pulling heavy objects.

The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities to be applied to repetitive lifting, carrying and manipulating various adaptive equipment needed for treatment.

Items may exceed 50 pounds.
