Job Title: Correctional Deputy II

About the Role

This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires strong communication and interpersonal skills. As a Correctional Deputy II, you will be responsible for maintaining security and ensuring inmate welfare in the County Correctional Facility or a substation. You will oversee operational activities and facilities during an assigned shift and perform related work as assigned.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain centralized correctional facility or substation security and ensure inmate welfare in accordance with laws, regulations, and institutional philosophy.
  • Obtain necessary information and book prisoners, completing required forms, taking photographs and fingerprints, and performing other processing activities such as preparing reports and maintaining files.
  • Search, examine, instruct, and log inmates; inventory and secure property and valuables.
  • Interview inmates; classify them and assign them to the appropriate detention area and activities; screen and recommend inmates for pretrial or other alternative programs.
  • Oversee and monitor inmates and inmate trustees assisting with housekeeping, meal preparation and distribution, laundry, and similar activities.
  • Oversee inmate exercise, recreation, visiting, and similar privileges.
  • Assist medical staff in the distribution of medications; screen and refer requests for medical attention; administer emergency first aid as required.
  • Accompany and/or transport inmates for court, medical offices, attorney's visits, facility transfers, and similar movement.
  • Inspect facilities and report the need for maintenance or unusual situations; request and/or issue clothing and supplies.
  • Prepare reports and other written materials; maintain accurate records, logs, and files.
  • Testify in court as subpoenaed.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and terminology related to the operation of a correctional facility and the oversight of inmates.
  • Laws, codes, and regulations governing inmate detention, release, and the legal rights of inmates.
  • Techniques for dealing with individuals from various socio-economic backgrounds in hostile and/or confrontational situations.
  • Basic first aid practices and procedures.
  • Basic office administrative practices, including filing.
  • Business arithmetic.
  • Correct verbal and written English usage.
  • Standard office equipment, including the use of personal or online computers.

You will also need to possess:

  • Interpreting, applying, and explaining applicable laws, codes, rules, and regulations.
  • Responding calmly, quickly, and decisively to emergency or stressful situations.
  • Exercising sound independent judgment within legal and procedural guidelines.
  • Maintaining facility security and inmate welfare.
  • Overseeing and directing the work of inmates in structured situations.
  • Preparing clear and accurate reports and other written materials.
  • Maintaining accurate records, logs, and files.
  • Understanding and carrying out oral and written directions.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
  • Operating standard office equipment, including word processing software and computer systems.
