Description

Are you dedicated to enhancing the recreational experiences for individuals of all ages and abilities? The Watsonville Parks and Community Services Department is on the lookout for passionate and skilled Recreation Class Instructors to become part of our dynamic team. In this role, you will have the chance to impart your knowledge and lead engaging activities in a welcoming and diverse setting. We are particularly interested in instructors for various program areas, including but not limited to skateboarding, golf, basketball, and more.

JOB SUMMARY: This position entails planning, instructing, and overseeing a specialized recreation program or class with minimal supervision. Instruction may encompass a variety of areas such as group fitness, wellness, arts and crafts, outdoor activities, dance, educational workshops, and personal development. Instructors may cater to specific age groups or offer programs suitable for all ages. Employees in this role operate under general supervision, adhering to established policies and procedures. This position may also involve guiding and overseeing the work of Recreation Leaders, Center Attendants, and volunteers.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Designs and leads a specialized recreation class or program, establishing clear program objectives. Demonstrates instructional techniques to participants, ensuring engagement and adherence to industry standards.
  • Prepares necessary instructional materials and supplies, and manages the setup and cleanup of the activity area.
  • Delivers exceptional customer service, communicating professionally with participants, parents, and colleagues.
  • Enforces departmental regulations, maintaining order and discipline within the program.
  • Assists in supervising and directing assigned program staff.
  • Maintains accurate records and prepares reports as required.
  • Responds effectively to emergency situations, ensuring participant safety.
  • Fosters positive public relations and maintains a safe environment for all participants.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:

Knowledge of:
  • Developing and managing recreational programs within a specialized area.
  • Effective teaching methods tailored to various age groups.
  • Utilizing technology for organizing and disseminating information.
  • Proper English language usage for clear communication.
  • Modern principles and practices of recreation management.

  • Provide innovative leadership in organizing and conducting recreational activities.

  • Prepare detailed reports and promotional materials.
  • Collaborate effectively with community groups and staff.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and resolve conflicts.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Physical demands include walking, bending, squatting, and lifting up to 50 lbs.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Typical qualifications include participation in sports, arts, or similar activities, along with experience in supervising recreation programs or related leadership roles.

LICENSE & CERTIFICATION:
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License.
  • Must obtain CPR and first aid certifications within six months of employment.
