Job Description

The City of New York is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) professional to join our team as a City Research Scientist. This is a critical role that will play a key part in ensuring the health and safety of our employees and the public, while also promoting environmental sustainability and compliance with regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and guide the EHS program at our wastewater treatment plants, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and industry standards.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to our EHS team, including coaching and mentoring to ensure they have the skills and knowledge needed to perform their duties effectively.
  • Develop and implement EHS performance reports, setting objectives and targets to improve our performance and reduce risks.
  • Investigate incidents and near-misses, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
  • Represent the City in external inspections and site visits, ensuring compliance with regulations and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with other departments and stakeholders to develop and implement EHS policies and procedures.
  • Provide training and development opportunities to our EHS team, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge needed to perform their duties effectively.
Requirements:
  • A master's degree in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental science, or public health.
  • At least two years of experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative, or research capacity in the EHS field.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and implement solutions to complex EHS challenges.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, with multiple priorities and deadlines.
Working Conditions:

This role will require working in a variety of environments, including wastewater treatment plants, offices, and construction sites. The successful candidate will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and use field equipment, including four-gas air monitors and sound level meters. They will also be required to work off-hours, including early morning, evening, and weekends, as needed.
