About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Maintenance & Relief Plant Operator to join our team at American Water. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the smooth operation of our water treatment plants and groundwater systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Troubleshoot and Maintain Equipment: Troubleshoot, install, operate, maintain, inspect, repair, and perform preventive maintenance duties on equipment at water purification plants and groundwater treatment systems.
  • Calibrate and Adjust Chemical Feed Equipment: Calibrate and adjust chemical feed and process equipment, including instrumentation and control systems.
  • Monitor and Control Plant Operations: Monitor the water purification plants and groundwater systems, making adjustments as necessary to control their operations.
  • Perform Sampling and Testing: Perform sampling, testing, and laboratory analysis to monitor process and determine compliance with Federal, State, and PAWS standards.
  • Emergency Response: Perform necessary emergency operating procedures and take proper corrective action for continuous effective operation of the water purification plants and groundwater systems.
  • Maintenance and Custodial Duties: Maintain all necessary records, tools, and work equipment, and perform maintenance and custodial duties at production facilities.
  • Light Construction Projects: Perform light construction projects as needed, including carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical, masonry, etc.
  • Specify and Initiate Orders: Specify and initiate orders for parts and supplies.
  • Assume Duties of Plant Operator: Assume duties of plant operator in the absence of the operator as needed.
  • Delivery and Storage of Chemicals: Delivery, loading, unloading, and placing into storage water treatment plant chemicals, including chemical receiving and inventory.
  • Maintenance of Grounds and Facilities: Maintain grounds, buildings, roadways, screens, reservoirs, and right-of-ways.
Requirements
  • Experience: Two years of experience in the water/wastewater maintenance field or other applicable mechanical/electrical experience.
  • Mechanical Ability: Mechanical ability sufficient to understand the operation of pumps, valves, motors, and other mechanical equipment related to plant operation and maintenance.
  • Waterworks Operators Certificate: Ability to obtain Waterworks Operators Certificate (Plant Specific) within one to three years, depending on class.
  • Scientific and Water Purification Concepts: Knowledge of basic scientific and water purification concepts.
  • Valid Driver's License: Must possess a valid PA driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Waterworks Operator's Certification: Waterworks Operator's Certification in appropriate class is desirable.
  • Instrumentation and Control Systems: Ability to troubleshoot instrumentation and control systems by using specialized testing equipment is preferred.
  • Prior Experience: Prior experience operating and maintaining equipment in an industrial setting is preferred.
  • Technical College Course Work: Technical college course work and/or degree in electrical, electronics, or applicable engineering curriculum is desirable.
