Company Background

Mainspring Energy, Inc. is dedicated to realizing a vision of a sustainable, dependable, and net-zero carbon energy grid. We have pioneered a novel category of energy generation — the linear generator — which provides localized, scalable, and versatile power solutions, facilitating the transition towards a carbon-neutral energy future.

The distinctive features of Mainspring's linear generator cater to both commercial and utility sectors within the expansive $816 billion global electricity equipment market. Our clientele includes a diverse array of Fortune 500 companies across various industries, as well as leading utilities and other grid-side providers.

We aim to cultivate relationships with individuals who resonate with our core values:

  • Pragmatic Optimism: Establishing a new category of top-tier energy generation demands a blend of ambitious creativity and practical problem-solving skills. Challenges present opportunities for advancement.
  • Excellence without Ego: We commit to delivering an exceptional customer experience, from initial engagement to deployment and ongoing service, while maintaining technical rigor in our product development. We pursue excellence with the humility to recognize our collective and individual challenges.
  • Proactive Collaboration: The interdisciplinary nature of Mainspring's operations necessitates actively engaging with individuals who possess diverse skills, perspectives, and priorities. Our culture of inclusion and respect extends to our partners and customers.

Key Responsibilities

Mainspring is in search of a Materials and Process Engineer to become part of an interdisciplinary engineering development team. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with the broader team to establish and refine materials and process specifications for components within Mainspring's Linear Generator system, thriving in a dynamic and fast-paced environment that encompasses engineering, research and development, and manufacturing.

  • Conduct material testing programs to assess performance and qualify suppliers. Employ standard testing methodologies and innovate new tests for specialized applications in areas such as tribology, corrosion, strength, and fatigue.
  • Collaborate with engineering and supply chain teams to formulate material selection processes and acceptance criteria.
  • Engage with design engineers to develop and implement risk analysis processes, participating in cross-functional teams executing Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for design, processes, and maintenance.
  • Enhance materials specifications and processes for cost-effectiveness and reliability.
  • Work collaboratively to develop and optimize critical processes, including:
    • Thermal spray coatings
    • Castings
    • Plated and painted coatings
    • Welding
    • Heat treatment
    • Adhesives

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science/Engineering or Metallurgy is required; an advanced degree is advantageous.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience as a Materials or Mechanical Engineer, or 2 years with a PhD.
  • Process development experience in areas such as welding, heat treatment of ferrous and non-ferrous materials, casting, or corrosion-resistant coatings is essential.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% to engage with vendors and suppliers.
  • Comprehensive understanding of engineering materials, basic metallurgy, and manufacturing processes.
  • Knowledge of material failure mechanisms (e.g., fatigue, creep) is highly desirable.
  • Experience in process development, including vendor collaboration, specification preparation, and qualification planning.
  • Familiarity with materials characterization and Non-Destructive Testing is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills, capable of serving as a technical subject matter expert.
  • Understanding and application of FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis).
  • Proficient in data analysis and reporting tools (e.g., Matlab/Python, Google Docs, Weibull ++).
  • Self-motivated and adaptable, thriving in a fast-paced environment.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is competitive, with additional pre-IPO stock options and benefits. Salary will be adjusted based on the candidate's experience.
