Job Overview

As a Controls Application Engineer, you will play a crucial role in enhancing our control systems and ensuring optimal performance for our clients. Your expertise will be vital in delivering exceptional engineering support for our Energy Management Systems (EMS) and other automation products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Become a subject matter expert on the functionalities and operations of our control systems.
  • Provide engineering assistance to clients utilizing our EMS, focusing on HVAC, lighting, energy monitoring, and building automation solutions.
  • Innovate and develop tailored solutions to address customer technical requirements using our existing hardware and software offerings.
  • Support our sales team and prospective clients by delivering technical insights during the sales process.
  • Analyze control data to recommend energy and operational enhancements for clients.
  • Manage technical projects, including pilot tests and equipment rollouts, ensuring timely execution.
  • Maintain regular communication with large commercial clients to foster strong relationships.
  • Conduct data analysis and generate standard reports for client review.
  • Collaborate with our data analytics team on custom and complex analytics projects.
  • Deliver technical training sessions for clients and internal users of our systems.
  • Act as a resource for resolving escalated issues from our technical support team.
  • Document technical issues and feature requests for our design engineering department.
  • Create comprehensive technical product documentation and training materials.
  • Draft technical statements of work (SOW) for various projects.
  • Participate in design reviews, offering technical expertise and recommendations.
  • Engage in additional projects and responsibilities to support ongoing business objectives.

  • Contribute to product development and enhancement by effectively communicating customer needs.
  • Manage projects independently while often working with minimal supervision.
  • Approach complex problems with innovative solutions and fresh perspectives.
Required Knowledge and Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of EMS, BMS, and BAS controls, particularly in HVAC and lighting systems.
  • A diverse set of technical skills is essential for effective collaboration with various products, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Understanding of energy consumption, building operations, and maintenance optimization.
  • Ability to perform energy use and sustainability calculations.
  • Familiarity with electrical wiring, including 3-phase power systems.
  • Knowledge of RS-485 communication wiring and basic electronic engineering principles.
  • Awareness of energy and controls building codes, such as Title 24, IECC, and ASHRAE 90.1, is advantageous.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting HVAC systems is a plus.
  • Experience with SQL queries and database management is beneficial.
  • Exceptional communication skills, particularly in presenting technical concepts to management-level audiences.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Ability to produce clear and concise technical documentation.
  • CAD experience is an added advantage.
Experience and Education
  • A minimum of relevant experience in building controls or a closely related field is required.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering is mandatory.
Location and Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform essential responsibilities independently, including conducting meetings and travel.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% for client and internal meetings.
  • Remote work options are available, with flexibility for in-person or hybrid arrangements.
