Job Summary

This position is an exciting opportunity to join the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration team as an Ancillary Testing Coordinator in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. As a Medical Technologist, you will play a crucial role in developing and recommending policies and procedures for ancillary testing, ensuring compliance with CLIA licenses, and providing technical consultation to management at all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and recommend policies and procedures for the procurement and service requirements for ancillary or point-of-care testing equipment and instrumentation.
  • Ensure appropriate correlation among multiple instruments and methodologies.
  • Train and evaluate the competency of ancillary testing users in the performance of ancillary testing procedures and in the reporting of results promptly and accurately.
  • Serve as a technical consultant to provide authoritative advice and ancillary testing program consultation in areas of quality control/assurance, records control, proficiency testing, inspection, and accreditation.
  • Evaluate ancillary testing activities to assess ongoing day-to-day compliance with established protocols and guidelines.
  • Recommend policy/protocol changes to correct deficiencies and improve the program.
  • Create, apply, and monitor reengineering and continuous performance improvement initiatives.
  • Identify, define, and resolve issues associated with complex aspects of the data and ensure the validity of data in relation to the test systems.
  • Consult with program managers or equivalent of clinical services to identify ancillary testing needs and to analyze emerging trends and technology.
  • Identify, define, and resolve problems associated with unique or controversial aspects of the ancillary testing management program.
  • Develop technical bulletins, procedures, training materials, and other program materials to ensure accreditation and compliance with all regulatory agencies.
Requirements
  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Certification: Must currently possess the appropriate certification as a MT, MLS, or CLS given by the ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT.
  • Education: A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science, or a related science.
  • Experience: At least 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the full performance level (GS-11) in a clinical laboratory setting.
