Job Overview

The role of the Canine Training Specialist involves overseeing our Obedience Training Programs. This includes direct training sessions with both clients and their dogs to instill fundamental obedience commands in a group setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure consistent and reliable attendance.
  • Work assigned shifts and be adaptable to varied hours, including evenings, weekends, and overtime as needed.
  • Proactively support sales initiatives by engaging with customers and their pets, recommending suitable products or services, and creating memorable experiences.
  • Foster a positive, professional, and trusting atmosphere for all team members, customers, and their pets.
  • Manage phone inquiries and schedule obedience classes while being available in-store to discuss our training programs.
  • Guide obedience clients in selecting necessary products for class participation and at-home training.
  • Follow established Petsense training protocols as outlined in training documentation and video resources.
  • Train clients and their dogs with patience, consistency, and sensitivity to their unique needs.
  • Respect individual customer preferences in their dog training journey.
  • Utilize verbal cues and non-physical methods to maintain calmness in dogs during training sessions.
  • Promptly report any incidents or injuries to the Store Manager.
  • Complete all required training documentation accurately.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and maintain cleanliness standards in training areas.
  • Perform a variety of duties throughout the day, including operating cash registers, participating in inventory processes, merchandising, and ensuring the well-being of live animals.
  • Be prepared to undertake additional tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience: A minimum of one year in pet training is required. Comfort in working with dogs is essential. Previous retail experience and knowledge of pets or live animals is highly preferred.

Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is necessary. Combinations of education and experience will be considered. All associates must possess the ability to read, write, and perform basic arithmetic accurately.

Preferred Skills and Attributes

  • Strong knowledge of pets, pet food, and related products is advantageous.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ethical approach to conflict resolution.
  • Compassionate treatment of animals.
  • Attention to detail is crucial.

Work Environment

  • The working environment is generally favorable, typically indoors with moderate noise levels.
  • Floors are hard surfaces, and lighting and temperature conditions are adequate.
  • Exposure to grooming tools, pet grooming products, and animal waste is expected.
  • Shifts may vary in length but typically last no less than four hours and can exceed eight hours.
  • Commitment to promoting a safe and productive work environment is essential.

Physical Requirements

  • This is a physically active position.
  • Team members must have the stamina to move quickly and safely throughout the store and outdoor areas.
  • Ability to read, write, and perform basic calculations is necessary for documentation.
  • Efficient operation of all relevant equipment is essential for delivering excellent customer service.
  • Capability to lift and move merchandise weighing up to 50-75 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods while grooming animals.
  • Frequent movement around the salon for grooming and maintenance tasks is required.
  • Proficiency in using grooming tools, including shears and dryers.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, and squat regularly.
  • Consistent operation of store equipment such as computers and cash registers is necessary.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required for effective interaction with team members and customers.
  • Successful completion of all required training is mandatory.
