Associate Laboratory Microbiologist II

Job Summary

We are seeking highly skilled and experienced Laboratory Microbiologists to join our team at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. As an Associate Laboratory Microbiologist II, you will play a critical role in laboratory testing and responding to public health threats, including COVID-19, vaccine-preventable diseases, HIV, and other infectious diseases.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and train laboratory staff and trainees
  • Analyze and coordinate daily laboratory operations, including outbreak response
  • Plan and supervise laboratory services to ensure regulatory compliance
  • Prioritize and schedule work to optimize operational service
  • Ensure adherence to safety standards and regulatory requirements
  • Manage laboratory inventory, storage, and supplies
  • Assist the Unit Chief and/or Director with laboratory activities and operations
  • Participate in cross-training programs to support routine and surge events
  • Develop and implement technical and non-technical procedures as needed
  • Perform high and moderate complexity laboratory testing and procedures
  • Generate and release reports, maintain records, and perform tasks related to laboratory testing
Requirements
  • Baccalaureate degree in medical technology or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • One year of laboratory experience at the technologist level in the appropriate laboratory specialty or specialties
  • Eligibility for a New York State Clinical Laboratory Technologist License
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a clinical or environmental diagnostic testing laboratory
  • Supervisory experience in an environmental laboratory setting
