Responsibilities

The Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for providing direct outpatient care under the supervision of a physician.

The neurosurgery physician assistant is qualified to assess, diagnose, and treat neurological/neurosurgical disorders.

The PA's primary responsibilities include:

  1. Obtaining medical histories when necessary
  2. Performing physical exams within established protocol
  3. Diagnosing, treating, and monitoring acute and chronic diseases within protocol guidelines
  4. Ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests
  5. Prescribing or recommending medications within protocol guidelines
  6. Responding to emergency situations in an appropriate manner
  7. Promoting positive lifestyle habits through education and counseling
  8. Maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality
  9. Working closely with other nurses to ensure efficient patient flow
  10. Consulting with the supervising physician regarding patient symptoms
  11. Providing comprehensive teaching to patients and families
  12. Responding to patient telephone calls within clinic protocol timeframe
  13. Adjudicating incoming referrals within clinic protocol
  14. Communicating with referring providers as necessary
  15. Reviewing diagnostic testing results within clinic protocol timeframe
  16. Completing paperwork such as FMLA and disability requests within clinic protocol timeframe
  17. Overseeing clinical data collection for quality improvement or database reporting
  18. Conducting relevant research
  19. Participating in quality improvement
  20. Attending meetings as requested
  21. Performing other duties as assigned
