Your Role and Responsibilities

The Linux development team is dedicated to enhancing the Linux kernel for IBM Z / IBM LinuxOne, which includes working on device drivers, libraries, tools, compilers, debuggers, virtualization (KVM), and test automation (CI/CD). Collaboration with international development teams, global Open Source maintainers, and Linux distribution partners (such as Red Hat, SUSE, and Canonical) is essential. The focus is on supporting the IBM Z / LinuxONE architecture, including new processor instructions, I/O attachments (PCIe, NVMe, Ethernet, RDMA), and accelerators for AI and cryptographic functions. The Linux platform on IBM Z / LinuxONE underpins many of IBM's commercial solutions in Cloud, Analytics, Finance, and AI.

As a vital member of our dynamic team, you will significantly contribute to creating outstanding software experiences.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and specifying new enhancements
  • Coding and implementing test automation
  • Diagnosing and resolving issues
  • Conducting performance analysis
  • Submitting code to upstream community repositories
  • Engaging in client support and potential speaking opportunities at conferences

We are particularly seeking new team members to expand our KVM development group, focusing on KVM/kernel, QEMU, and libvirt.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 3+ years of experience in Open Source development in areas such as KVM, Linux kernel, QEMU, libvirt, virtio, and vfio
  • 2+ years of experience in low-level/assembler development, preferably on non-x86 architectures
  • 2+ years of experience in operating systems and virtualization/hypervisor development
  • Expertise in operating systems internals, including memory management, task scheduling, interrupts, and device drivers
  • Proficiency in source code repository systems (e.g., git), scripting languages (e.g., Python), and test automation (e.g., Jenkins)

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • Contributions to Open Source projects or holding Open Source maintainer status for multiple years
  • Knowledge of virtualization and emulation technologies (e.g., QEMU TCG)
  • Familiarity with current I/O technologies (e.g., PCI, NVMe, RDMA)
  • Understanding of IBM Z architecture and I/O concepts
  • High motivation and demonstrated communication skills
