Position Summary:

The Deputy Chief of Teaching & Learning, focusing on Instruction and Program Supports, will assist the Chief Teaching & Learning Officer in formulating a comprehensive, research-informed strategy for educational support. This role involves overseeing the creation, execution, and assessment of the district's universal professional development initiatives, support for novice educators, and the vision for distributed leadership, alongside establishing new frameworks for grading consistency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the execution and ongoing enhancement of the universal professional development strategy to drive measurable improvements in educator effectiveness and student outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Chief T&L Officer to provide robust strategic leadership across various Teaching & Learning domains, including:
    • Advanced Learning and Specialty Programs
    • Distributed Leadership
    • Instructional Systems and Supports
    • New Educator Induction & Mentoring
    • Professional Development
    • Student Engagement & Voice
  • Guide, develop, and assess direct-report department heads:
  • Offer clear leadership and strategic direction regarding universal professional development, distributed leadership frameworks, and support for new educators.
  • Provide regular feedback on individual, team, and departmental progress.
  • Exemplify a growth mindset, effective collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and problem-solving.
  • Ensure that expectations are communicated clearly to department leaders and maintain high accountability standards related to progress toward established goals.
  • Assist the Chief T&L Officer in steering the annual strategic planning and continuous improvement processes for the Office of T&L:
  • Collaborate with the Chief Officer and T&L Department heads to formulate and refine strategic plans, ensuring alignment and convergence of priorities across departments.
  • Manage and work closely with department leaders to ensure effective monitoring of progress and verify that all strategic plans are measurable.
  • Co-design and facilitate continuous improvement sessions aligned with strategic priorities for all T&L departments.
  • Partner with the Office of Network Support leadership to identify and coordinate differentiated academic support based on essential data.
  • Assist the Chief T&L Officer in managing operational tasks and processes, including:
    • Representing the Office of T&L at Board Briefings.
    • Preparing materials for Board members regarding key initiatives.
    • Collaborating with chiefs across academic departments.
    • Working with the central office Budget Analyst to develop and monitor annual budgets aligned with strategic priorities.
    • Facilitating effective hiring and staff support in collaboration with the Talent Office.
    • Working with the Executive Director of Instructional Systems and Supports to identify resources for district-wide grading coherence.
    • Supporting large-scale, district-wide events such as the Summer Leadership Institute (SLI).
  • Establish effective relationships with stakeholders beyond the Office of T&L to communicate priorities and engage in dialogue to enhance T&L effectiveness.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Master's degree in Education or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Valid teaching certification from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) with relevant endorsements is required.
  • Doctorate in Education (EdD) or Philosophy (PhD) in a related field is strongly preferred.

Experience:

  • A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant professional experience in education, including:
  • At least five (5) years of formal leadership experience managing a team within a complex educational organization.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a school principal.
  • Classroom teaching experience, including curriculum design, assessment development, and student performance analysis.
  • Experience in creating differentiated instructional strategies and leading professional development for teacher leaders.
  • Preferred experience in project and change management.
