The primary objective of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Law Enforcement Officer is to safeguard and serve the community and its judicial framework with diligence and professionalism.
Applicants must be a citizen of the United States, at least 21 years of age, and hold a high school diploma or equivalent at the time of application.
Successful candidates must complete a 19-week Deputy Sheriff Training Program at an accredited institution.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Adheres to the chain of command and follows all directives and procedures as established by supervisory personnel;
- Executes court orders, warrants, and legal documents;
- Conducts property seizures and auctions;
- Ensures courtroom safety and security;
- Transports detainees securely;
- Enforces Protection from Abuse orders, including the confiscation of weapons and eviction processes;
- Monitors detainees in custody and during transport;
- Reviews firearm applications for dealers and permits to carry;
- Upholds court mandates;
- Manages legal documentation;
- Maintains accurate records and prepares detailed reports;
- Communicates with legal representatives, defendants, and other relevant parties;
- Secures evidence and property;
- Travels for extradition purposes;
- Collaborates with law enforcement during incidents and court proceedings;
- Enforces criminal statutes;
- Issues permits for firearm carry and manages related tasks;
- Completes all necessary documentation in a timely and professional manner;
- Represents the department at various community events while maintaining a professional demeanor.
APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER POSITION
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
* AGE REQUIREMENT: Applicants must be at least 21 years old. There is no upper age limit.
* CITIZENSHIP REQUIREMENT: Applicants must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application.
* DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Applicants must possess a valid Pennsylvania driver's license and maintain a clean driving record prior to employment.
* EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Applicants must fulfill the educational standards set by the Pennsylvania Deputy Sheriff's Education and Training Board.
* PHYSICAL FITNESS REQUIREMENT: Candidates must be in good physical condition to perform the essential functions of the position effectively.
* PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION REQUIREMENT: A psychological evaluation is required after a conditional offer is made.
OTHER EMPLOYMENT CRITERIA
- Applicants must demonstrate good moral character through a comprehensive background check;
- Visible tattoos on the face, neck, or head are not permitted;
- Candidates must possess strong problem-solving and decision-making skills;
- Effective communication skills are essential for interacting with the public;
- Ability to exercise authority in potentially hostile situations is required;
- Proficient reading, writing, and comprehension skills are necessary for accurate report writing;
- Willingness to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, is essential.
PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST: Candidates must successfully complete a physical agility assessment based on the standards established by the Pennsylvania Deputy Sheriff's Training Academy.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT DOCUMENTATION: Following the physical agility test, candidates will be required to complete various forms, including a Personal History Statement.
INTERVIEW PROCESS: A panel interview will be conducted to assess the candidate's suitability for the position.
BACKGROUND CHECK: A thorough investigation of the candidate's background will be conducted.
MEDICAL SCREENING: Candidates receiving a conditional offer will undergo a medical examination.
ADDITIONAL SCREENING:
- Fingerprint check;
- Required documentation verification;
- Drug screening;
- Possible second interview.
REAPPLICATION PROCESS: Candidates who do not meet the selection criteria may reapply after a specified period.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of mandated training standards;
- Successful completion of the Deputy Sheriff's Education and Training Board program within one year of hire;
- Ongoing training requirements every 24 months;
- Additional training may include defensive tactics and firearms training;
- New hires will serve a probationary period.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The role requires maintaining physical fitness for various activities, including lifting, running, and operating vehicles.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The position involves exposure to various environmental conditions, including emergency situations and potential hazards.
