Job Overview

Position Summary

The Healthcare Informatics Specialist will report directly to the Director of Clinical Informatics. This role is essential in ensuring that all electronic health records are systematically oriented towards providers, with a focus on education and compliance audits in line with the implementation documentation expectations of each clinical unit within the healthcare facility.

The Specialist will provide insights on clinical system implementations, focusing on functionality and documentation for patient care services. This includes device integration and addressing user needs for physicians, allied health professionals, and clinical staff, ensuring alignment with current standards of practice and regulatory requirements.

This position integrates nursing and ancillary services with scientific practices, computer science, and information science to effectively manage and communicate data, information, and knowledge across clinical and ancillary areas of the healthcare facility.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide strategic vision and oversight for complex enterprise projects, establishing both long-term and short-term plans for information technology systems that support clinical operations.
  2. Design and support training for clinical information systems; coordinate all health information system operations to enhance interdisciplinary clinical practice and patient safety initiatives.
  3. Translate clinician requirements into specifications for the redesign of clinical information systems and workflows within the electronic health record.
  4. Manage the design, acquisition, training, and implementation of clinical informatics, including software validation and user acceptance testing.
  5. Organize teams to support ongoing efforts in optimizing electronic health record documentation systems.
  6. Identify and implement information systems that support clinical disciplines through research and planning.
  7. Facilitate effective communication between various clinical user groups to ensure smooth implementation of functional elements and major upgrades.
  8. Assess risks and develop mitigation strategies related to electronic health record optimization.
  9. Collaborate with hospital leadership and department managers to facilitate problem-solving and ongoing communication.
  10. Serve as the primary clinical resource for the education department regarding all clinical applications and system upgrades.
  11. Evaluate clinical staff understanding of clinical systems post-implementation and recommend ongoing training needs.
  12. Utilize structured problem-solving methodologies to identify issues and develop informatics solutions.
  13. Complete specialized training congruent with the Health Information Technology department and demonstrate the ability to cross-train within clinical modalities.
  14. Conduct clinical rounds to validate the effectiveness of the electronic health record documentation system.
  15. Prioritize responsibilities and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  16. Maintain composure and effectiveness under pressure and tight deadlines.
  17. Adhere to all written policies and procedures of the healthcare facility.
  18. Demonstrate knowledge of the Watson Model of Care, including key elements of Care, Competence, Communication, and Commitment.
  19. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

A. Education

  • Bachelor of Science degree in nursing (individuals without a BSN will be required to complete the degree within five years of their hire date).

B. Qualifications/Experience

  • Minimum of two years of acute care experience required.
  • At least one to two years of clinical IT experience with electronic health record systems.
  • Current California Nursing license.

C. Special Skills/Knowledge

  • Bilingual language skills preferred (Spanish).
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
